Introducing our Music Tutors

CAROLYN THOMAS - CONTEMPORARY VOICE TUTOR

Carolyn Thomas is a contemporary vocalist and singer/songwriter based in Perth. She completed her Bachelor of Contemporary Music at WAAPA in 2015 and has since been performing around Perth in various ensembles and contexts, including cover bands, wedding bands, tribute bands, acoustic duos, original bands and as a backing vocalist. Carolyn released a self-titled EP in 2017 of her original music, and played an EP launch that year. She has been teaching vocals for the past five years and has become increasingly passionate about educating and guiding young singers in their musical journey, and helping them achieve their musical goals—some going on to study at WAAPA. Currently, Carolyn is studying her Master of Music Therapy online at the University of Melbourne, whilst continuing to teach and perform around Perth.

1. What is your favourite thing about being a Music Tutor at ASC?

I love to see the students improve in their singing and achieve their musical goals. They are all really great kids and it is a privilege to teach them.

2. Where do you find inspiration for your original songs?

I’m usually inspired by life events and the emotions that follow, which then often turn into a narrative of their own.

3. What is your all-time favourite song?

I’m not sure I can pick one all-time favourite song, but currently, I am obsessed with Hamilton, and my favourite song from that is ‘Wait for It’. I definitely recommend giving it a listen!

4. If you could have dinner with any famous musician, who would it be and why?

Beyoncé. Need I say more?

5. What is one word you would use to describe yourself?

Eclectic. I have a lot of different interests and passions in life and I tend to try and follow them all at once which makes life very busy and interesting.

Afternoon Tea Concerts 2020

CELLO

Last Tuesday we were fortunate to begin our Afternoon Tea Concert series with Mrs Emma O’Keefe’s cello students performing a variety of fun pieces for their families in a relaxed environment.

Beginner cellists from the Year 3 and 5 String Programs embraced the occasion, performing in small groups for an audience for the very first time. Others presented solos, including ‘The Swan’ by Camille Saint-Saens, ‘Budapesto’ by Carey Cheney and ‘Witches’ Dance’ by Paganini. The concert concluded with a beautiful, moving arrangement of ‘French Folk Song’ and a rousing finale of the popular ‘Cowboy Chorus’ arranged by Rick Mooney. All performers were presented with Achievement Certificates acknowledging their progress so far this year.

I would like to thank Joy Wu (Year 12) and Joy Heng (Year 11) for accompanying our students so brilliantly, as well as our Director of Music, Mr David Harries, for this invaluable opportunity for our burgeoning cellists to experience the joys of live performance surrounded by family and friends. We are looking forward to our next concert!

VOICE AND PIANO

On Thursday, 30 July, the Afternoon Tea Concert Series presented a truly delightful afternoon of Vocal and Piano music featuring students of Miss Kristina Lang and Mrs Rosemary Jose on centre stage. The event in the relaxed space of the CPA Foyer saw students performing a range of classical, jazz, contemporary and musical theatre pieces.

It was wonderful to see our students perform to family and friends – some for the very first time – from Year 4 up to the more experienced students in Year 12. In light of the cancellation of performance opportunities in the past few months, we were fortunate this concert could take place. Students were presented with Achievement Certificates in recognition of the hard work they have put towards this performance.

We would like to thank all our talented students, their parents who continuously support their children’s Music education and those who provided a delicious afternoon tea. Our gratitude also goes to the Director of Music, Mr David Harries, and the administrative staff of the Music Department for making this performance possible.

Some testimonials from parents:

“We were so proud of her! Thanks so much for doing such an awesome job preparing her. She is really loving doing voice lessons with you.”

“What a wonderful evening! I feel very privileged that you are teaching both my children and that they have come so far.”

“Congratulations on a wonderful concert. The students did an excellent job.”

FLUTE

The Flute Concert was a huge success and both Ms Tresna Stampalia and Ms Hayley Rowntree were proud of all their students. Despite the concert being brought forward three weeks and after having a three-week break, all the students came well prepared. It was a great opportunity for them to perform in front of an audience, most with accompaniment. It was lovely to meet the parents afterwards and share some insight into their practice routines and goals.
