Middle Years

How are you going? This is the first question that comes to mind after eight days of remote learning. I hope all students (and parents) have settled into their new routines and making good progress. I hope you are enjoying what you are doing in class and have adopted a positive mindset towards our second phase of remote learning.

I have spoken quite a few families over recent days, and the approach from mothers has been that we just need to get on with this remote learning challenge. I like this pragmatic approach.

In wellbeing classes I have been asking students what their main challenge was returning to remote learning. The key themes that was raised by students is the need to be organised, wanting to be more efficient, to improve focus, to get sleep right and have a “just do it” approach.

Make it Happen

Alex Malley wrote The Naked CEO several years ago, and there is some useful advice for us all. Alex writes to make it happen you need to get organised.

  • Being disorganised is a learned behaviour, so we can also learn how to be more organised. Being disorganised puts more pressure on you. Organisational skills are universally expected in the workplace, so it's better to find the process that works best for you and stick to it.
  • Build a routine. Create a daily routine and stick to it. Set times for completing tasks, checking emails, completing homework. Be strict with your time as this will help you make deadlines.
  • Write down upcoming assessments on a calendar or your Record Book, so that you have plenty of time to get tasks completed.
  • Breakdown tasks into manageable parts so it doesn't overwhelm you.
  • Eliminate distractions. This could include untidiness on your desk, your phone being a distraction and general lack of concentration. Remember focus is essential. Eliminating distractions will have a powerful effect on your efficiency.
  • Always plan for tomorrow, this is proactive.

Last week, I wrote that this is a 25+Challenge. I am remaining optimistic, I am positive, and I am finding fun things to do each day.
