Week 8

This year a new Children’s Laureate has been announced to succeed Morris Gleitzman. Ursula Dubosarsky has been granted this award which celebrates her outstanding achievement as a writer for children.

The role of the laureate is to promote and encourage children’s interest in books, reading and writing. The theme for her term is Read for your Life. Ursula Dubosarsky speaks of the difference between ‘loving to read’ and ‘being able to read’. She encourages children to join local libraries so that they will have a wide range of materials to choose from. Interest and enjoyment in reading bring motivation to build reading time into busy lives.

We have a number of books by Ursula Dubosarsky in our Resource Centre. One the children especially enjoy is ‘Too Many Elephants in this House’ which is illustrated by Andrew Joyner, a resident of Strathalbyn.

Our Resource Centre also has a wonderful display of dioramas from the Year 3 students. A lot of creativity has gone into their representations of Day and Night contrasts. Well done, Year 3 … your work is attracting the attention of other students visiting our Centre.

And another magnet for interest is a hyacinth bulb sprouting a mass of roots in a clear vase and sturdy green leaves that have us all guessing what colour flower head they are hiding! We are hoping it grows fast enough to show itself before the holidays!
