Loving Others, Loving All

This week is Refugee Week and, at the same time, no one could be oblivious to the BLM movement that has gripped the world’s attention. Yet, we do not need to look beyond our shores to have cause for concern in the treatment of minority peoples.

To quote Uniting Church President Dr Deidre Palmer, “Together we grieve[d] Aboriginal deaths in custody that continue, despite the Royal Commission that happened 30 years ago.”

Do we not, as a Christian school community, have a deep and enduring responsibility to care for and love all people? Does not that type of loving mean we have to go out of our way to help the poor, the oppressed, the lonely, the outcast, the diseased, the afflicted, the unemployed, those in detention, those of all races and those who have had to flee their homelands?

Jesus’ command to love was extreme for he asked us to love as he loved. John 15:12

How can we possibly love like Jesus does? Well, to be honest, it will take a lifetime to answer that question. Possibly that is the point. Like anyone who sets out on an incredibly long journey, you simply must start moving and stay (more or less) in the same direction for a long time.

The best news about being a Christian is that we are not left alone in this call to love and serve others. Not only can we turn to other believers for tremendous support, even more importantly we are directed by Jesus himself to be taught by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is sent by the Father who comforts us and enables us to receive the assurance from Jesus to not be afraid.  John 14:26-28

Tyndale Christian School is a community that believes passionately in the power of God’s love and its ability to equip and strengthen us to love each other, no matter what the cost to us. It is enshrined in our Vision that states the purpose of our school as “to provide an excellent, inclusive Christian education that equips our students to serve God and His world”. It goes on to state the extent of our responsibilities, which are “to the local, national and international communities to which [our students] belong”.

You can read the full statement of Tyndale’s values here: https://st.tyndale.sa.edu.au/about-us/our-beliefs

It is the values of our faith and school that keep us steady, guide and comfort us in troubled times because they remind us that God’s love is real. His love for us makes all lives matter!
