National Reconciliation Week
Niina marni, marni naa pudni
(hello, welcome everyone)
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey — the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. This week and last week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. The theme this year is ‘In this Together’.
It is a time to acknowledge the past and look towards a united future. It is about our nationhood, citizenship, identity and maturity. It is about the kind of Australia we want to build, what it means to be an Australian citizen and the values that express citizenship. Central to Australia’s view of itself as a nation is the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider community.
May 27 - Marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census. As a result of the referendum, Aboriginal people were to be counted in the census. The referendum established citizenship status and confirmed voting rights for all Indigenous Australians.
3 June 1992 - The High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—that existed prior to colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights called Native Title.
Reconciliation is about unity and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and non-Indigenous Australians. It is about respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and valuing justice and equity for all Australians.
The staff and students at LNPS acknowledge the traditional owners of these Kaurna lands and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respect to the Kaurna people and their culture, and to elders both past and present.
Senior Kaurna man Mickey Kumatpi O’Brien invites us to learn more about Aboriginal culture. He teaches us about how elders use storytelling to strengthen identity, connection and to pass down knowledge and wisdom from generation to generation. A key component of storytelling is listening to the intent of the values behind the story. During reconciliation week, whose stories can you listen to with inquiring ears?
“With inquiring ears you get greater knowledge.” Mickey Kumatpi O'Brien
Last Friday Alisha and I attended an Introductory Kaurna Language Workshop ran by Jack Buckskin. This was both a challenging and exciting experience for us both. We are hoping to continue to build our knowledge in this area and introduce it across the whole school.

Parent/Caregiver Site Access
Thanks for your patience as we continue to navigate the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
Restrictions across the state are slowly being lifted and we are now in a position to allow parents/caregivers onsite for drop off and pick up as of Tuesday 9th June. The drop off and pick up at the gate has been highly successful and we would still highly encourage that this approach is continued.
If you do need to come into the school for drop off or pick up we ask that you do this quickly and do not congregate for long periods of time and that social distancing is still adhered to in line with Government guidelines.
No access into classrooms will be allowed unless an appointment has been made with staff in advance.
All things going well this will continue until the end of term and we will look at the situation again for Term 3.
We appreciate everyones understanding and support.
2021 Enrolments
Registrations of Interest for enrolling your child in 2021 are now being accepted.
Do you have a child that will be joining siblings at LNPS in 2021? All sibling enrolments for 2021 are now due to be completed at the Front Office.
Please don’t assume you can still enrol if you leave it too late. The Education Department has implemented a new policy and we have strict timelines that we need to follow.
Please contact us regarding Registration of Interest forms or download one from our website.
