Leadership Centre

Curriculum

With this week being the last week of Term Two, we would like to congratulate all students in the Leadership Centre on a successful first semester! Everyone should be incredibly proud of their efforts. The past two weeks have been wonderful as we have been able to reflect on our achievements over Remote Learning as well as reconnect with each other face-to-face.

Even though the term is coming to an end, students in the Leadership Centre continue to work to the best of their ability and all teachers have been very impressed with the level of engagement students continue to exhibit. Throughout Term Two, students thoroughly enjoyed reading the class novel, ‘Toad Rage’ by Morris Gleitzman and have demonstrated their deep understanding of the text by creating Word Webs. Students identified key characters and settings within the text and identified ways in which these certain elements connected.

In Writing, we continued our debating unit with students working collaboratively to prepare, rehearse and deliver their arguments on the topics: ‘Gender stereotyping still occurs today’, ‘MPRPS should become a Nude Food school’ and ‘We should change our national anthem’. Throughout the planning stage, students were encouraged to brainstorm arguments ‘for’ and ‘against’ their topic, regardless of their allocated stance, to prepare them for potential rebuttals. On Friday morning, the classrooms were rearranged to accommodate the debates and students showcased their public speaking skills. It was great to see students use a range of techniques to enhance audience engagement, with some debating teams incorporating multi-modal elements such as pictures, diagrams and short audio-visual clips. Throughout the debates, students used the Leadership Centre Feedback Model to record useful feedback to their peers. Be sure to look out for videos of the debates and peer feedback on Seesaw!

In Maths, students have continued to measure, classify and investigate different forms of angles through their mini-golf course design task they began last week. They were given set criteria outlining a range of features to include in their mini-golf course design. Students had to design 5 mini-golf holes that included mathematical information such as an example of each type of angle (reflex, right-angle, obtuse, acute, straight), accurate representation of 2-D shapes with internal angles identified and measured and a range of obstacles to challenge “the best of mini-golfers”. They have begun to form mixed groups to collaborate on a mini-golf course hole they can create using cardboard and other sustainable materials. The real-world connections students have been able to make has made the task engaging and creative and we look forward to students enjoying playing mini-golf within the courses they have made.

This week students will continue to research and portray information on an influential Australian of their choice. Students have been given the opportunity to present their findings in any way they wish! Already, there is a combination of hand-made and digital displays being created so far and we are looking forward to seeing the finished products. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will dress up as their influential person and video themselves summarising the life of that person, outlining their character strengths and their greatest achievements, using autobiographical dialogue.

Student Voice

  • I have enjoyed learning about my Influential Australian through project-based learning. I also liked that I could show creativity when making my poster
    - Simrah (5/6W)
  • Angles can be used in many different ways! I have enjoyed learning about the sum on all angles in triangles and quadrilaterals! - Tvisha (5/6W)
  • I liked working with different people when preparing for our debates. I did well to research facts on my topic and next time I would like to include pictures or videos
    - Aarav (5/6W)

Reminders

  • Please bring a named drink bottle to school as drinking taps are not in use in Term 2
  • Please return any outstanding notices that have been sent out

Pupil of the Week

5/6B: Emily C -

For designing a creative and artistic golf course design, incorporating both mathematical and artistic features. Your persistence and precision in designing your course was amazing and took great concentration. Well done Emily.

5/6C: Bella M -

For presenting an organized and fluid argument on the topic 'Gender Stereotypes still happen today'. Well done on using real world evidence to support your opinion. Great work Bella!
