We are so excited in the Ⓘⓒⓐⓡⓤⓢ Cσɱɱυɳιƚყ! It is been a challenge so far and the Ⓘⓒⓐⓡⓤⓢ Cσɱɱυɳιƚყ have risen to the challenge! We would like to congratulate all of the Ⓘⓒⓐⓡⓤⓢ Cσɱɱυɳιƚყ and their families for demonstrating such resilience, dedication to learning and support for each other. It was quite heart-warming to bear witness to the connections made throughout our whole school community and the amazing commitment everyone has demonstrated to caring for themselves, each other and striving for success!

This term we have practiced our inferring skills. Inferring means ‘reading between the lines’ to figure out something that the author doesn't explicitly say. To do this, we read picture books with rich visual images, read passages of written texts and watched short films with no dialogue. We then made inferences based on the evidence we could gain from each of these to help build meaning in the story.

One of our online learning tasks was Friday Book Videos, where students practiced their speaking skills by recording themselves reading their books. This was great practice of speaking clearly, pacing ourselves and learning how to pronounce new words.

Icarus students have also been focusing on building our stamina when we read. Every day, students read their independent reading books for a minimum of 20 minutes. All students are also expected to read for at least 30 minutes every night as part of their home learning. In class, we use our Reading Journals to keep track of books we have read and make notes using strategies to monitor our readings (such as summarising, predicting and making connections).

We are fast becoming a community of avid readers keen to share the exciting books we are reading with each other.

In Writing, Icarus began the year by looking at writing biographies and using synonyms to improve their language. Icarus have been working on the writing process to develop and improve their writing, such as, editing and revising, and rewriting.

The Ⓘⓒⓐⓡⓤⓢ Cσɱɱυɳιƚყ worked on procedural texts during online learning, to write instructions and recipes to support our Inquiry learning about solids, liquids and gases. We then looked at poetry and figurative language, and produced some amazing poems, demonstrating a very good understanding of rhythm and rhyme, and an exceptional understanding of poetic devices. We will be compiling an Icarus Anthology of Poetry to be enjoyed in our online library and at school by next term, but for now - here is a few examples of what Icarus students have been creating!

Next term, we will use what we learned about figurative language to work on narratives, and we will continue to develop our skills and strategies to develop our writing through the writing process.

In Maths this term, the Ⓘⓒⓐⓡⓤⓢ Cσɱɱυɳιƚყ have gone from consolidating their multiplicative thinking (multiplying and dividing large numbers), to learning some algebra! The 5/6 students have started learning what BODMAS is and have even created their own BODMAS equations using all four operations. Icarus were also introduced to the terms; square, prime and composite numbers. While online, the students created their own posters to represent these terms and gave examples of each. Next term we will be reviewing time, as well as measurement and additive thinking (addition and subtraction).

In Inquiry, we looked at different aspects of leadership and important world leaders in history. This term, we have been learning about solids, liquids and gases and their

qualities. We have conducted and observed some pretty interesting experiments and we are learning more about being better researchers.

In Social and Emotional Learning, we learned about leadership and how to be a good leader. We also looked at resilience and strategies to cope with different situations and daily life, such as meditation. We then worked on cybersafety and discussed ideas about how to be safe online. We are now looking at self-confidence and how to be a good friend.
