Visual Arts Report

Term 2, 2020

Argus Community

Since returning back to school, Argus have had the opportunity to experiment with a variety of materials, to produce wonderful artworks. Students made their own collaged monsters with pre-cut shapes, demonstrating they can layer and arrange paper to create an image. They made face masks with scratch paper, demonstrating their ideas about pattern and lines in visual art. Lastly students designed their own mixed-up animal through drawing, which was then coloured with oil pastel and paints.

Achilles & Ulysses Community

Achilles and Ulysses communities have been exploring the use of paper. They’ve experimented with ripping, folding, cutting, tearing, fringing, twirling and weaving. In the first week of returning to school they used pre-cut shapes to invent their own monsters. They have since taken this a step further and used different paper techniques to completely create their own monsters. It’s amazing how no two pictures look alike, they’ve all come up with such interesting and unique designs!

Xenica Community

Xenica have been using their imagination to create their own scary and cute creatures. They were given a simple stimulus of a ‘bump’, which they then had to turn into something. Many different ideas have been displayed in their drawings, from the weird to the terrifying! Students first used their visual diaries to brainstorm ideas for their creatures and are now using special paint markers to draw their designs onto fun backgrounds. Next term they will use these creatures to create posters to celebrate the Book Week theme of ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’.

Icarus Community

The Icarus community has continued to create some artworks inspired by the famous artist, ‘Keith Haring’. They’ve spent the last 3 weeks constructing a cardboard sculpture of a person, animal or shape. Students first designed a template, which they needed to draw and cut. Using their problem-solving skills, they then carefully constructed the walls of their sculpture, lining up the cardboard with the edges of their design. Next term they will get to complete their pieces by strengthening the design with plaster and adding vibrant paint to the piece. These will look great around the school, and I can’t wait to see them on display!
