College Council Report

To date, Council has met twice this year - in March (face-to-face) and May (using the WEBEX E-meeting system, which was quite an experience for some of us and gave a much better understanding of what our students and teaching staff were going through).

What I am very pleased to report is that, after a false start last year, our plans for the redevelopment of the school oval (adjacent to the GEC Sports Centre) are now starting to come to fruition. While the 2019 College Council had unanimously endorsed the plans, process changes within the Department of Education and Training had resulted in further approval being required from the Victorian Schools Building Authority (VSBA).

As a result, our plans to have the new facilities up and running by the commencement of the 2020 school year were delayed which resulted in the College deciding to seek the endorsement of the project from the incoming 2020 College Council.

Council endorsement was unanimous at the May meeting, which was attended by our Project Manager, Peter Egan. This week we met with VSBA representatives to give them an on-site overview of the project and gain their verbal endorsement. We will go to tender very soon – this process taking about seven weeks. Works should start shortly after that and take 3 months.

We now expect by the end of the 2020 school year, the College will have an all-weather, multi-purpose synthetic sports area incorporating a running track, soccer pitch/softball diamond/dividable physical education area, volleyball courts, table tennis area, long jump pit, and an open air spectator bleachers area.  The site will also incorporate re-landscaped passive recreation areas.

All going well, this should complete the re-energising of Glen Eira College and provide an excellent start to the 2021 school year.
