CAS Project Reflection

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) forms a core element of the IB Diploma Programme.  Students are required to complete a CAS Project, this is a group initiative that addresses an issue of global significance and has a positive impact on either the school or wider community. Here is a student reflection from the first CAS project.

Our group, consisting of Ingrid Holzapfel, Mia Bowcher, Charlotte Collins, Ciara Wilson, Isabella Purnell, Miles Martin and myself (Hugo Currie) decided to address the global issue of ‘Equality in STEM’, focussing on raising awareness about the lack of diversity in STEM related fields, predominately the lack of women in STEM. After working with Mrs Lister, Mrs Humble and other staff we had a project ready to present to each Year 7 science class in an effort to challenge gender stereotypes. These lessons involved a STEM based practical activity, real-life accounts of women in the field of STEM and general discussion to reinforce the message of the workshops. Each student was provided with resources to develop further interest and to support them if they choose to follow a STEM pathway. The overarching message of the workshops highlighted the value of teamwork, especially from a diverse team, the value of multiple opinions and perspectives, and that anybody can follow their passion and should not let any stereotypes block their path.

The experience has taught us all not only to respect our own teachers and their skill in managing large groups but also that being people of action and making a genuine difference to an issue of global significance can be explored within our school community. The discussion with each class provided significant insight into the very authentic perspective of Year 7 Science students. Each participant has been asked to fill out a reflective survey, and from this, our group has been able to reflect upon the data collected. So far, we have learned that we have had a noticeable impact on the classes and that their perspectives on stereotypes in STEM have changed. It has also been encouraging hearing feedback from their class teachers, to learn that our sessions were of value. The beauty of CAS is that it inspires students just like us to become people of action and challenges us to make a real difference in the community. We are all extremely appreciative of all staff involved in this project as without them this project wouldn’t be nearly as impactful. We would also like to thank the Year 7 classes as they have been extremely receptive to our sessions and have participated with enthusiasm.
