Luke McManus our amazing Year 12 Debate Captain for 2020 led his team to unbeaten success throughout the CSDA Debating season. Luke is an amazing debater and public speaker. His reputation for finishing his speech in the room where he was about to present…and then winning will stand for many years. COVID-19 issues prevented us from pursuing the Finals but Luke was a contender for this accolade. Luke worked with Mr Ryan Balboa to coach and prepare the Year 12 team throughout this season and seeing the respect that the 15+ Year 11 debaters have for Luke as their Captain was really moving. We are so lucky to welcome Luke back as a co-coach for Year 12 2021 so there is no need to say goodbye…he is going to still be with us every Friday evening. Congratulations Luke on your Gold Colour Award and we all look forward to working with you next season.
Year 7 Debating 2020 Summary
by Coach, Ms Leigha Zervakos
Against all the odds our Year 7 debating team have had an especially impressive season this year. The 7A team won 3 out of the 4 debates, while our 7B’s remained undefeated throughout the rounds and progressed into the finals. The season started off with a turbulent Zoom debate against Marist Woolwich, where unfortunately we were delayed quite significantly due to some technical difficulties on their end. In saying this, once we had finally begun the session, both of our teams competently put across their best efforts to secure the title of winner. It was here that the 7B’s started their path of success, while the 7A’s conceded defeat Woolwich, losing only by the skin of their teeth!
Following on from Woolwich, we pushed forth to claim victory in the west, with our students travelling via rail to reach our destination of Marist Eastwood. Armed with masks and hand sanitiser, our troop arrived at the gates eager and ready to win in what would be our first face to face, and only off campus debate. It was here that our boys were able to share the taste of triumph together for the first, but not the last time, as both our 7A’s and 7B’s went on to win. Clearly the above success was a catalyst to a continued conquest across our region, with the following round also ending in victory for both the 7A’s and 7B’s against Gilroy College, who travelled to compete with us in our final face to face, and first home ground match.
Our closing competitors were Loreto Normanhurst, where we were tasked in hosting the event over a Zoom meeting. The boys fought valiantly, outwitting and rebutting the opposing team’s points, their efforts led to both of our Year 7 teams to be the champions of this final debate. At any other time, a single loss would have warranted a place in the finals, but due to the current circumstances and climate, that was not the case this year. And so, while our 7A’s were well worthy of a spot in the finals, only the 7B’s progressed into the next phase of the debating season.
Continuing into the finals, our 7B students were able to secure a win against Our Lady of Mercy Parramatta, allowing them to progress further into the semi-finals. Unfortunately, this was followed by a loss to Bede Polding Windsor, ending the 7B’s 2020 debating journey. Most importantly both of our Year 7 teams showed respect, tenacity and intelligence throughout all rounds, and therefore to say I am proud of their successes would be a great understatement.

Basketball teams will be announced at the start of next term. We are endeavouring to ensure that all students who want to trial for a basketball team get at least one opportunity to trial for a team. If needed, we will hold trials at the start of next term before finalising the teams for the ISA season.
Good news. We have been able to fit an internal competition into our Saturday program, so that all students in Year 7 and Year 8 who have not been selected for a team in the ISA competition, will be offered a spot to play in our internal competition. These teams will all have a coach, a set training session and will be playing their matches at Oxford Falls on Saturdays.
The first round of games for all teams will be Saturday 24 October. All teams will begin training in Week 2 of next term.
Information and announcements regarding game management protocols and spectators will be made next term. To start the season NO SPECTATORS will be allowed into the courts. The team, coaches and two people to run the score bench will be allowed into the courts. Teams will be instructed when to enter venues and leave. Teams will not be allowed into venues until the previous games' teams have exited the venue.
