CEO Report

CEO: Samantha Kolasa

Dear Families,

What a year 2020 proved to be! As I reflect on the past 10 months, the challenges are certainly front of mind. However if I look further, I also know that I have been part of history. I have led an organisation through its greatest challenge to date. I have been privileged to hear the stories of others – both the highs and the lows. I have watched some of my staff grow and thrive. I have had the opportunity to spend more time with my child and animals. I have been privy to tears (sometimes my own), and I have been surrounded by laughs as we have tried to navigate the COVID world.

I have spoken to children over the past six months who have no idea that this pandemic will (hopefully) be a once in a lifetime experience for them. With only a few years under their belt, it is difficult for them to comprehend that this isn’t something that happens every few years. I have spoken with friends about their concerns that their own children ask each night at dinner how many people died that day. It has been heart breaking. I have also spoken to others that have appreciated the time with their children at home that would never have previously been a reality. I have been part of many new recipes and memes on social media.

Our year has been consumed by COVID and our children have traveled that very long journey with us.

It has not been easy at times. Many of you will no doubt be worried about the longer term impacts of the pandemic on your child’s development. I encourage you to speak with your child’s teacher. Speak with other parents. Access the numerous resources that are available on-line. Most importantly though……children need a home that is safe and one that provides unconditional love and care.

Remember they are resilient, and they will look to you for strength and reassurance. This is not always easy to provide as we grapple with our own challenges. If you need help, don’t be ashamed to ask. I want to sincerely thank my head office team for their work this year. Words cannot begin to describe the hours worked, the frustrations experienced with changing government policy, and the logistics required to ensure that our community remained safe. I want to also thank the teachers and educators that continued to work through the pandemic. I know many were anxious about their own safety in contracting the virus, and your dedication to children and families must be commended.

I want to wish you all the very best for the weeks and months ahead - hopefully Santa can travel more than 25 km to deliver gifts of joy to those of you that celebrate Christmas. To those that celebrate a different holiday, my best wishes to you all as well.
