From the Head of Campus

Dear Preshil community

DP Subject Expo: making great decisions

Our Year 10 students are prepping for an exciting suite of experiences as they head into Activities Week. Bronte, our Careers Practitioner, leads the charge, providing students the opportunity to explore their futures and develop employability skills in food handling, Melbourne-standard espresso making and entrepreneurship. Our DP Subject Expo at 6pm on Monday 12 August kicks off the event, showcasing an impressive array of subjects tailored to student interests and future pathways.

Choosing subjects in the senior years of secondary school is often characterised by joyful anticipation, mild trepidation and higher education hoping. Some students have known since kindergarten what they want to do, whereas others will be umming, ahing and evaluating their choices until the eleventh hour.

The conventional wisdom of selecting DP subjects regards student interest, further study or career goals and student aptitude as high priorities. Parents have a unique perspective in this process, as mothers and fathers often understand their children’s motivations better than the children do themselves. No doubt by the time students have reached this stage of Year 10, many dinner-table discourses have been enjoyed. Attending university open days, reviewing recent school reports and going through feedback for recent assessments are effective ways of finding the best way forward.

Our DP Theory of Knowledge students will testify that good decisions are the product of rigorous consultation, scrutiny and arising consensus. The School offers counsel in a number of ways. Primarily, our teachers are an incredible resource; the intimate nature of our School provides the unique opportunity for each student to receive personalised guidance. Our teachers bring together an in-depth knowledge of their specialisation and each student. To facilitate this, the upcoming DP Subject Expo provides a great opportunity to make the most of the wisdom of school staff. Students and parents are encouraged to bring questions, concerns and ideas to conversations on that day. To ensure that all avenues are investigated, I challenge everyone to bring their most stupid question.

Additionally, you will be able to seek consultation with Bronte, our incredible Careers Practitioner, and Linda, our highly experienced DP Coordinator.

Lastly, while the evening is designed to meet the needs of Year 10 students exploring their choices for 2020, we welcome conversations with students and families from any year level. These are the kinds of conversations that can build motivation for today’s academic efforts, as well as tomorrow’s choices.

It looks to be an exciting time, and I look forward to seeing you there!

Warmly

Dan
