The Lofties - 6s & 7s

Measurement

This term the 6s & 7s have been very busy measuring. Measuring is something most of us do everyday.  In our everyday practical situations we often use estimate along with measurement. The 6s & 7s have been measuring ingredients each week when we have been cooking. We discovered that you can fit ⅓ of a cup of muffin or frittata mixture in muffin pan. We had estimated that it might have been ¼  or ½ a cup.

The children have been comparing lengths of things both inside the classroom and outside at Darebin Park during Bush School. We have compared lengths of objects using non standard or informal measurement including feet, hand spans and coloured markers. The class talked about why we had to use the same unit of measurement to compare the length of objects. We have used a standard measure to compare the length of the desks in our room. Some of the children discussed how to measure the round table to compare it to the 'making' table.

Whilst it was easy to take 30cm rulers to bush school it was more challenging to carry a metre rule. Using metre long pieces of string we could continue or use of both standard and non standard measures in nature.

After we discovered that the Darebin Creek was a body of very clean water we spent a session using a range of containers and we were also able to compare capacities.
