Peppercorns - 10s & 11s

A Busy Term

What a busy Term 4 it has been! Rosie and I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Peppercorns and their families a happy, peaceful and restful break. We are looking forward to continuing to work with the10s going into the11s and welcoming the new10s and students who will be joining our class in 2020. Some of the children have taken the time to write about what has been happening this term and what events they still have to look forward to before school is out. Enjoy!

10s & 11s camp

On Wednesday 6 November, the 10s and 11s went to Camp at Point Leo for 3 days. When we got there we played some fun games to get to know our camp leaders. Then we split up into two groups: The Bin Chickens and Team Anonymous. We were split up into tent groups and started setting the tents up. We then went to the beach and looked in all the rock pools. After swimming (knee deep) in the ocean, we came back to the campsite to cook dinner and relax.

Unfortunately, the weather the next day stopped us from going on our bush hike so we walked along the beach instead. In the middle of the walk, we stopped to have a friendly competition about which group could make the best sea monster sculpture with the materials found along the beach. After that we found a park and stopped to have lunch. We headed back to the campsite to dry off from the rain and hang out with all our friends in our tents.

In the morning, we were all very sad to leave the camp but excited because we were going to the Dolphin Research Institute. We learned all about different kinds of sea life like dolphin mating calls and spider crabs.

Finally, we got on the bus and went back to school. We made some hot chocolate with marshmallows to warm everyone up when we got back.

All in all it was a great camp and I would do it again any time!

10s and11s Orientation Morning

On Wednesday 20 November the 10s had an orientation morning at Arlington. In our class, we had 5 new kids spend the day with us. The 9s from the Sunroom also joined us for the morning. We played some ‘getting to know you’ games. I really enjoyed this because it gave me the opportunity to meet new people and find things out about people. We also wrote a letter to our teachers for next year saying things about us that we want them to know. At fruit and lunch I played with most of the new kids and it was really fun. I am super excited for next year!

Year 7 Transition

For the Year 7 Transition the 11s went over to Blackhall/Kalimna on Wednesday 20 November. The day started early! We meet all the students and Year 7 & 8 Coordinators on the front lawn. While we were on the front lawn we were talking to other people about our interests. Then we were given our show bag, which contained information about the day’s timetable, the Year 7 & 8 camp and next year’s book list.

We were then split into two groups. My group did PE and Music in the morning. At fruit, we all met on the front lawn again and I spoke with some current Year 7 friends. There was yummy food provided for us to eat. After fruit, I had Design Tech and we participated in a challenge that required us to build the tallest tower we could using marshmallows and spaghetti. Then we went to Art. In Art we did some Observation Drawing. We also made paper planes to see who could throw them the furthest. During lunch we explored the school and the different areas. After lunch we had Science. We learnt about solids, liquids and gases. We also looked at some crystals the teacher made. The teacher also showed us an interesting experiment using Iodine. At the end of the day, we all met together again with the coordinators and we discussed all the different programmes that happen at the High School.

I had a lot of fun doing all the different classes and activities. I also enjoyed seeing some familiar faces. I am looking forward to starting Year 7 next year.

The Play: A Pixelated Life

Every year the 10s and 11s put on an end of year play for the school community. This has been an ongoing tradition as a way to say thank you to the teachers and students of Preshil. This year we came up with the theme of ‘trapped’ and created a play called ‘A Pixelated Life’. Four kids, bored at home, decide to go to their local arcade to have some fun. But something goes horribly wrong. What will they do?

Every person in the 10s and 11s has taken on a role and is contributing to the play in some way. There are actors, prop makers, singers, dancers, sound technicians and backstage crew. I have taken on the role of advertising, which has involved making posters and booklets. A lot of work is going into this play and we are looking forward to the show. Feel free to come and watch! It will be taking place in the hall on Friday 6 December at 2pm in the Hall.

End of Year Celebrations & Valedictory

On the last day of school which is Tuesday 10 December, the Peppercorns will be having a shared lunch. Everyone brings a plate of food and we all eat together at one big table. The tables in the classroom are joined together in one long row.

After everyone has had something to eat, the 11s have the opportunity to say a speech about our time at Preshil and farewell everyone. The 10s write a song for the 11s with Michelle in Music. Usually, they base the song on another song and then change the lyrics to make it about the 11s. The 10s perform this song on the last day of the year after the shared lunch. The 11s are given a graduation gift on the last day of the year as well, which they can get signed by all their classmates. At the end of the day, all  the 10s make an archway with their arms for the 11s to walk through to say farewell.
