Teaching & Learning

Meet and Greet

Next Tuesday 11th February is our Meet and Greet evening. On this evening parents have the chance to meet with their child’s classroom and specialist teachers to help build a greater understanding of each student’s learning needs.

The purpose of this session is to provide an opportunity for:

  • Teachers and parents to meet.
  • Teachers to explain routines and what to expect as part of the 2020 learning program,
  • Parents to ask questions
  • Teachers to get to know more about the student

On this day there is an earlier dismissal time of 1 pm to allow for interviews to take place throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Bookings for the Meet and Greet will open on your Compass Portal at 4pm today.

Should you require some assistance with booking a Meet and Greet time please feel free to contact the office or your child’s classroom teacher.

Scotsburn Campus

Will conduct a slightly different version of the Meet and Greet this year. Parents will have the opportunity to hear about the rituals and routines of the 2020 learning program at 5.30pm in the Multi-Purpose Room (Shed) and then meet casually with their child’s classroom teacher from (6pm). A  BYO family Picnic will also occur at this time to welcome in the new school year.

Due to complications with buses, Scotsburn students will finish at the same time (1pm) as the Buninyong Campus on this day. Staff will spend the afternoon in professional learning.

Prep – Wednesday Testing

On Wednesdays throughout February the Prep students have a rest day that allows them to get used to the rigours of life as a primary school student. On these days parents of Prep students have booked their child into a Prep Entry Assessment interview during which teachers can gain valuable information about literacy and numeracy skills that will help inform their teaching and learning program.

What to Expect in First Few Weeks

Our focus during the first two weeks of school this year has been to build a learning culture within the classroom. We do this through our Ready, Set, Go program which focusses on creating the routines and rituals for learning and the opportunity to create relationships with the students.

It is for this reason formal literacy and numeracy lessons will not be a regular part of our learning program until Week 3.

During this time you will see students taking part in: (just to name a few)

  • Team work activities.
  • Problem solving opportunities.
  • Discussions, conferences and class meetings
  • Brainstorming and creating thinking charts.
  • Activities that focus on our school values.
  • Strategising on how to be organised, self motivated and reflective learners.
  • Setting up timetables and learning how to read them.
  • Moving around the school safely including getting to and from specialist sessions.
  • Dissecting inside and outside behaviour flowcharts.

Homework

An important role of parents, when it comes to homework, is to foster the love of learning!

At Buninyong Primary School our Homework Program aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Develop effective study habits and organisational skills.
  • Practise and revise skills learnt in class
  • Tune-in to future learning opportunities.

Homework will officially start at the end of this week. Students will receive homework in line with the Homework policy. All students will bring home tasks on Friday and will be required to return it on the following Thursday.

It is expected that all students complete a minimum of 15 mins reading every school night and record this in a reading log.

Below is a table with guidelines for homework, beyond the nightly reading, that you could expect at each year level across the school. These times are weekly. eg Your child in Year 3 could expect 40 minutes of homework activities each week.

If you are finding homework is taking longer than the guidelines indicate, please encourage your child to see their classroom teacher.
