On Reflection
It is becoming increasingly apparent that social media is changing society at large. We are seeing more and more examples of selfish standards of behaviour in attitudes towards others, in advertising, in free-to-air television programs and in the loose language of some media presenters.
Mature adults tend to choose to switch channels or ignore or filter social media. But many children, adolescents and some adults find the dopamine-driven addiction to positive feedback too powerful to resist.
We need to be acutely aware of the effects of social media. We need to remind our young people to be in control of their media experience: to limit their exposure to screens of all kinds, to be alert to how this media is affecting their thinking and their lives.
St Paul gave us a powerful message as relevant today as ever:
“Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, whatever is noble,
whatever is right, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable,
if anything is excellent or praiseworthy,
think about such things” Philippians 4:8 (NIV)
