Year 12 Industrial Technology Students have been working diligently this year to produce their Major Projects. The various styles of projects designed by our students demonstrates a broad range of planning and production skills to successfully complete these projects within a specific time frame.

Library  - Book Week is coming!

This year we are looking forward to yet another brilliant celebration of the joys of reading. The theme, 'Reading is my Secret Power', lends itself to an adventure into heroic texts but that does not mean that other genres cannot be enjoyed.

We will be running special programs and events in the library during week 7 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Some of the things you can look forward to include:

  • Storytellers: We will have a different reader every period to read a story or tell a tale to classes that are booked into the library
  • Student readers: This year we are going to open the stage for students to read to their peers.
  • Book Giveaway: Once again we have an enormous amount of fiction and non-fiction to give away. This initiative has been one of our most popular attractions in the past as we get even the most reluctant reader excited about books. Come grab something for yourself or for a loved family member during the celebrations.
  • Crochet/Weaving: Our crafts table will be getting an upgrade this year with the addition of weaving lessons which will allow students to make themselves bracelets, keychains or even crystal necklaces.
  • Dress up competition: On Wednesday we will be having a mufti-day where everyone will be encouraged to dress up like their favourite fictional character. With the theme of the year emphasising powers, I am expecting a lot of super heroes.

Students and staff of Lake Illawarra High School have already been showing their excitement for this year’s Book Week and who can blame them. The week promises to be one of the best of the year.

From all of us here in the library, all the best and as always, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Parent's guide to Online Safety

Many parents and caregivers feel out of their depth when it comes to understanding their children's use of electronic devices and the internet. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has published new resources aimed specifically to help, with tips and advice on ensuring safe and enjoyable experiences online. The link to access these resources is:

and downloads are available in multiple languages. The resource is highly recommended.

Harbour Centre News

It has been a busy start to the term in the Harbour Centre, with several fantastic opportunities for our students.

Harbour Centre Sport runs every Friday in periods 5 and 6 and this term we are bike riding and exploring our local area. What a fantastic way to end the week.

In History we have been studying WWI and are about to move onto WWII. As a result, we have planned an overnight trip to Canberra to visit the War Memorial, Questacon and a few other exciting activities. Please pay at the office and return notes to classroom teachers. Don’t miss out, this is going to be a fantastic trip!

In Visual Arts, students have been busy weaving and exploring different materials and ways to weave. We will be entering some of our weaving into the Sculptures at Killalea competition where our instillation last year came second in the schools category.

Some of our students have been participating in a Project-Based Learning task. They were asked 'What will our lake look like in the future?' and were tasked to design a reusable item that will reduce the single use plastic footprint of Lake Illawarra High. The Harbour Centre class designed a Lake Illawarra High School re-usable coffee cup. The winning design is to be produced and will be available for purchase.

UOW Engineering Day

Five students ranging from Year 7 to 12 attended the University of Wollongong Engineering Day on the last day of Term 2. Russia Cox (Year 9) and Jai-Ann O’Nains (Year 9) were responsible for designing financially effective and structurally sound housing for residents living in the floating villages in the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. Their ideas were innovative and unique. Miranda Perceval (Year 12), Reah Twyford (Year 10) and Katie Brown (Year 7) were given the challenge of constructing a bridge to withstand weight while only using a limited number of resources. The girls excelled in this activity and their design was highly praised by everyone in the workshop. All five of the girls worked collaboratively with students from other schools and experienced life as a university student, exploring different parts of the Wollongong campus.
