Principal's Message

We are indeed blessed at Lake Illawarra High to have so many of our staff who are so keen to use innovative ways to engage students in their lessons and to foster the love of learning. Over the last two terms many of our staff have been working together in a collaborative way to incorporate Project Based Learning into their classrooms. I have had the pleasure of being invited into a number of classrooms to see the result of this learning, and I can say that I have been super impressed. Not only are the students really enjoying their learning but when questioned on the concepts that the students have been learning about they have been able to display a really deep knowledge and understanding of the material. Some of the projects have included designing experiments to show the difference between elements, compounds and mixtures, solving engineering problems through design, making ice cream and so on. This is learning at its most exciting!

We are currently looking to refurbish some old, disused PE change rooms into a high tech Flexible Learning Center. This facility would allow us to really utilise all of the 21st Century learning pedagogies into many of our subject areas to do exciting hands on lessons, using the latest technology. We have applied through the My Communities initiative to try to access some extra funding that will allow us to make this a reality. There is more information contained in this Newsletter. It would be great if our community could support us in our goal.

Congratulations to all of our students for the wonderful things they are achieving. It was fantastic to be able to read our student reports at the end of term 2 and to see the level of achievement that the majority of our students are obtaining.

It is also great to see our students performing at such high levels in the extra-curricular areas as well....Chelsea Ezeoke breaking records at the district athletics carnival in Canberra, Jarrod Dyer winning gold, silver and Bronze at the All Schools Swimming Carnival in Adelaide and Mikayla Amos performing brilliantly at the Quota Club Youth of the Year public speaking event in Wollongong. Congratulations to you all.

Deputies' Desk

Lake Illawarra High School has applied for a $200,000 state government grant to build a Flexible Learning Center to further engage our students and we need your support.

The learning space will allow for Collaborative, Project based, Student-Centered learning, which will develop in students the critical 21st Century skills that will make them more relevant in our new world. It is widely acknowledged, that one of the central elements to influence engagement and to improve student outcomes to reflect the employment skills needed for the jobs of the future, is the space in which the learning takes place.

The flexible learning space will benefit our community as it will provide a safe and engaging space which can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, our current co-curricular link with our partnership high school Oak Flats High School or our extended curriculum here at Lake. For cultural connections with the wider community as a place to meet and share ideas, or to celebrate successes and achievements.

Congratulations to Jarrod Dyer!

Jarrod recently attended the School Sports Australia swimming championships as a NSW representative and has once again performed well. This is the last time that Jarrod can qualify for this very elite event, as he is currently in year 12. Its very fitting that in his final time as  a NSW All Schools Representative, that Jarrod was so successful. There is further information in the PDHPE/Sports report, however, myself and Mr Meizer would like to wish Jarrod the best of luck when he represents Australia in October this year.
