'And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself."' Luke 10:27

We are less than two weeks away from Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, which fall on 26 February this year. Lent is a reminder of the importance of sacrifice, prayer and looking after those in need and helps us more deeply understand the Easter event that is at the centre of our Christian faith.

We can use this time to consider how our actions are defining our relationship with God, with others and with our deepest self. Lent is a time for renewing those relationships based on compassion, truth and justice.

Pope's February prayer intention

Pope Francis' prayer intention for February is to listen to the migrants’ cries, more specifically: 'We pray that the cries of our migrant brothers and sisters, victims of criminal trafficking, may be heard and considered.'

The February Pope Video is available on The Pope Video website.

The prepared prayer intentions for all of 2020 are available on the Pope's Prayer Network.

Launch of Project Compassion 2020

On Tuesday 25 February, Archbishop Peter A Comensoli and Caritas Australia will launch the annual Project Compassion appeal at Catholic Regional College, Caroline Springs.

Each year, Caritas Australia's Project Compassion brings together Catholic communities across Australia during Lent to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

The 2020 Project Compassion theme is ‘Go Further Together’. Schools are encouraged to make use of the stories, videos, teaching materials and activity ideas on the Caritas website. This will help raise awareness among students on issues affecting young people globally, such as poverty and injustice, particularly as depicted in the six Lenten stories from the PhilippinesCambodiaAustraliaIndiaMalawi and Papua New Guinea.

Schools are also encouraged to make Project Compassion a major fundraising activity for the school community during Lent. Advice on fundraising activities is available on the Caritas website.

Money raised for Project Compassion goes towards Caritas Australia's humanitarian and long-term development programs in 27 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific and with Australia's First Peoples. Last year Project Compassion raised $10.8 million.
