Kitchen Garden News

Our kitchen and garden program has begun for the year.  This year due to the number of students we have participating, our grade 5/6 students will be participating in the kitchen program all year and the garden program during semester 1 and our grade 3/4 students will be participating in garden all year and kitchen in semester 2.  Students in grade 1/2 will be introduced to the garden program approximately twice per term.

The school garden is producing an amazing abundance of summer fruits, herbs and vegetables.  The stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums) have been dripping from the trees.  The birds have enjoyed a feast but Trish and her garden helpers have managed to harvest many, many kilos of delicious fruit.

The first menu of the year is full of fresh produce including nectarines, tomatoes, zucchinis, lemons, basil, parsley, chives, mint and eggs. Thank you to the Menz family for donating three Sussex chickens who are now laying some delicious eggs.  Far from being rusty in the kitchen after the long break the 5/6s have impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm.  The menu being prepared and enjoyed by the students is as follows:

  • Garlic Basil Brown Butter Pasta
  • Greek Zucchini Tots with Minted Yoghurt
  • Tomato Herb Salad
  • Nectarine Breakfast Cake

As always, Trish and I welcome family members to join in the kitchen/garden classes.  The students love having you contribute to their learning by being involved!
