Sports Report

From Mr O

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this fortnight’s edition of ‘The Crier’.

Hopefully the warmer weather is being kind to you as it has jumped from the cooler months into some hot spring heat! Fortunately for Cobram AGS, this has stopped our talented sports people, who have done an amazing job and excelled.

Since our last entry, we had a number of students continue on with their athletics journey. Isaac Crawford (Year 8) represented the school at the School Sports Victoria State Athletics Championships, where he found himself pitted against the 7 best 14 year old Male 400m runners in the state down at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne on Friday 18th October. In an amazing run, Isaac was right in contention for a placing but, unfortunately, couldn’t sustain it to the end and was pipped on the post for the bronze medal!!! It was a very gallant run and one he should be extremely proud of!!!

On the same day in Albury, 15 Year 3-6 students represented Cobram AGS at the Hume Region Athletics Championship and what a day it was for the school!!! From the first 3 rotations of events, we had secured 2 GOLD MEDALS!!! In the end, we had Charlie Fox (Year 5) dominate the sprints events, claiming the title of the Sprint King of the Hume Region, with gold medal performances in the 9/10 Boys 100m and 200m!!! Sarah Stone (Year 5) took out the 11 Girls Long Jump with a jump registering 3.94m! Mackenzie O’Dwyer (Year 6) won a bronze in the 12/13 Girls 200m, narrowly missing 2nd place by .36 of a sec and then got pipped in the Triple Jump, finishing in 2nd place, by a mere 5 cm! To end the day, our Year 11 Girls 4 x 100m Relay team, made up of Chelsea Clancy, Zahlia Kautai, Heidi Franklin and Sarah Stone (all Year 5), did a magnificent job to finish with a bronze medal! This saw Sarah, Charlie and Mackenzie all qualified for the SSV State Athletics Championships, which were held in Melbourne at Lakeside on Thursday, 24th October. All competed to the best of their ability where Charlie finished in 9th and 11th in the 100m and 200m, Sarah ended up 15th in the Long Jump and Mackenzie narrowly missed the final 8, finishing in 9th (recorded PB in process). Well done to all the students who represented the school during this magnificent athletics programme, which saw it being the most successful in the school’s history!!! Well done and congratulations!

On the extra-curricular front, congratulations to Kohen Haddrell, Archie Paterson and Lachlan Pardy (all Year 2), who were part of an Under 9 Cobram Junior Football Association team, which finished runners-up in the 2019 Australian Football Skool tournament, held in Shepparton over the last weekend, 26th- 27th October. In a nail-biting final, the boys and their team were narrowly beaten 2-1 to a team, which had travelled all the way from Darwin, the Mindil Aces!!! Congratulations on your terrific achievement!

Congratulations to the 16 Year 5/6 students, who represented the school in a Woolworths T20 Blast Cup cricket tournament in Nathalia last Friday aswell. Coming up against Cobram Primary and Nathalia Primary, the girls had an outstanding couple of games to dominate the opposition whilst the boys had a couple of narrow losses in their matches! With the results going in the girls' favour, they will now represent at the Regional final, which is to be held in Rochester on Wednesday, 20th November!!!

Well done to all students on their fantastic representation and sportsmanship and thanks to Caitlin Welch (Year 8) and Regan Fox (Year 9), who assisted with the umpiring, scoring and supervising of the girls' team!

With the summer season coming upon us, a number of students are starting to compete in swim and athletics meets and I will give an update on how students are progressing in a future edition.

Keep up the fantastic work! Always give your best and work hard at improving your ability and skills.

Until next time, God bless and take care!

Regards,

Jon O’Dwyer
