Kinder Book Week

By Kirsty Meese (Kinder Teacher)
We love reading books in Kinder!! So it is always an exciting time of the year when we celebrate Book Week. This year we were blessed to have a multitude of BHCS staff members come and visit Kinder and read to us their favourite books each day!
We began Book Week by going on an excursion that involved catching a bus, and a train to Belgrave, and walking through Belgrave township to the local library. At the library we met Chris the librarian who read to us a variety of books.
On our second day of Book Week we were very excited to have more mystery readers, and we visited the Maker Space. On Wednesday, the three year olds were visited by mystery readers as well as Mrs Nicholls' VCE Drama group.
Much to everyone's excitement on Thursday, we teamed up with our 5/6 buddies to have a book parade in the Discovery Centre. There was an amazing variety of dress ups and some very ingenious book parade ideas! Team Kinder would like to say a big “Thank You” to all the families and children of Kinder and 5/6 SB for joining us in our celebration.
We concluded our celebration of book week on Friday by having a tour of our very own Discovery Centre. During our tour we got to learn that there were classrooms behind the big doors (which was a big surprise to the Kinder Kids!) and that when we are Preppies we can come to the DC at recess and lunch to play a game, borrow books or maybe even watch a movie.
Some of the Kinder Kids favourite parts of book week were:
- Dressing up
- Mr Crawley reading “Ugly Fish”
- Going to the Library on the bus
- The mystery reader that danced with us
- Seeing mystery readers
- Seeing the buddies and reading books
- Learning about how we can borrow the DVD’s (Audio books in the DC)
- Mr Wilson reading a book to us
We can't wait to celebrate Kinder Book Week next year!
Mystery Readers
Since I have started working at BHCS I have fallen in love with the sense of community that is ever present here, and never in my working career have I experienced such a loving and warm community as the one we have at this school.
So it came as no surprise when I put a request out for “Mystery Readers” to come to Kinder and read to the Kinder Kids, that I was flooded with responses. In the lead up to book week it was so heart warming to hear the the excitement in the BHCS Staff as they discussed which book they were going to read, how they were having trouble narrowing their book choices down from five to just one and told of tales of going into their attic or basement to dig out their child’s favourite book.
During book week the Kinder Kids, Team Kinder and the Kinder families have thoroughly enjoyed listening to different teachers tell familiar stories in new ways, hearing stories told in Dutch, seeing the props that some staff members brought with them to enrich their story telling experience and getting to know more of the BHCS staff members.
To all of our mystery readers, “Thank You”, thank you for giving up your time to come down to Kinder and read to us, thank you for touching our hearts with the generosity of your spirit and thank you for being such enthusiastic book lovers! We think that you are all awesome and we feel very blessed to be a part of such a supportive community.
