CAREERS NEWS

May 2023

In term two, we welcomed Nicky Smith into the Careers Team.  Nicky’s first tasks are supporting year 9 and 10 careers programs including RIJI and Year 10 Work Experience.  Welcome Nicky!

2nd Annual Careers Expo

Our year 10, 11, and 12 students met with more than 30 tertiary educators, TAFE, social enterprise, industry and apprenticeship organisations in the gym at Wurun Senior Campus.

Year 10 students from both Fitzroy High School and Collingwood College heard from a panel of current senior students who undertake Vocational Education and Training (VET) and received an overview of senior pathway options from our VET Leader, Louise Speirs-Bridge.

Wurun Senior students had the opportunity to hear presentations and see demonstrations from our visitors.

All students were free to approach exhibitors of their choice to ask questions and learn more about careers and pathways that interest them.

Our exhibitors then had the opportunity to tour the campus.

The feedback was extremely positive from exhibitors and students alike.

Events like this take a village!

Thank you to our VET Panel of students: Ari Jackson,  Dubhessa Bryant, Elise Vandali, Crusoe Bishop, Bryce Gooch, Korpo Sao, Remy Frayne, Elaine King, Jessica Duff.

StraighTalk: Smith Family Mentoring program

Year 10 students from both Fitzroy High School and Collingwood College attended Wurun Senior Campus on 26 April and took part in an innovative industry engagement program delivered by the Smith Family through their Growing Careers program.

In groups of 5-6, students spent 15 minutes with an industry mentor of their choice before moving to another area in a ‘round robin’ style event.

Representatives from diverse industries met with students to talk about their businesses, future work and career opportunities, and pathways.  Industries represented included aerospace engineering, trades, animation and IT, environmental, financial services, entrepreneurs, printing and magazine industries.

The event allowed students to learn about different industries, build confidence having careers conversations and to explore opportunities.  Some resourceful students even lined up their work experience placements.

Thank you to the Smith Family for the opportunity for our students to attend.

Trades Fit

About 20 year 9, 10 and 11 students volunteered to attend the Trades Fit Expo on Wednesday 10 May.  Trades Fit is an event hosted by the Victorian Government to showcase a traditionally-male industries to female and non-binary audiences.

It was a hands-on expo with students exploring careers through Virtual Reality, and trying activities in locksmithing, automotive, horticulture, mining, aviation and engineering and construction trades.

We were all smiles on the way home with each student saying that they had learned about careers they didn’t know about before.

Work Experience

Year 10 students are currently in the process of securing work experience placements for the weeks of July 17th and 24th. Our future chemists, lawyers, carpenters, engineers, hospitality bosses – and many more – are making contact with nearby businesses to organise their opportunity to get a taste of the real world. Be sure to ask them about it! And if you’ve got a business who can host, please let Nicky know at nicola.smith@education.vic.gov.au

RIJI: Real Industry Job Interviews

Collingwood College will again participate in the INLLEN (Inner Northern Learning and Employment Network) Real Industry Job Interview Program.  This will see our Year 9 students develop job application documents based on a real job ad, and will attend a mock job interview in October to put their job interview skills developed in class to the test.  Feedback will be provided from the volunteer interviewers to help students reflect on their interview performance.

Students will develop their job application documents in class and will hear from industry guest speakers as part of the program.

1:1 meetings at Wurun Senior Campus

Each year 12 student has the opportunity to meet with a careers team member in term 1 and 2.  We’re more than halfway through meeting the students and learning about their exciting plans for post secondary education.  Our students are looking forward to going to university or TAFE, starting apprenticeships or traineeships, enjoying a gap year or entering the workforce.
