First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria - Wurun Visit

by Tim Webster

The First People's Assembly of Victoria visited Wurun for a special presentation earlier this term. The Assembly is the democratic voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria and they have been appointed with the task of developing a Treaty in Victoria. Voice, Treaty and Truth are the three elements of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Members of the Assembly presented on the history of the Assembly, the framework for developing Treaties in Victoria, and how the youth can be involved in the Treaty process. Following the presentation was a super fun dance contest in the Wurun gym.

This was a great opportunity for our VCE Sociology students and young First Nations students to learn more about Treaty and understand how they can be involved in the process. Wurun was proud to host this event and attendees to learn more about this important pillar of the Uluru Statement from the Heart

Victorian Pathways Certificate - In the workplace

Senior Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) students have had the opportunity to work with Melbourne Carpet Specialists as a part of their Work Related Skills (WRS) subject in the VPC. Every Friday a selection of students have been going to various houses around Melbourne and installing carpet. They get taught on the job and also get paid, which is great.

Read about the experience from two students:

I was really lucky to have outstanding supervisors. They were all different but they were all kind and patient. It was exciting to learn new skills. I found it really satisfying when I was able to do the work independently. My favourite part of the work is when I complete a job and I know I've done it well. Now I've got another skill to add to my resume. So far this year I've worked at Melbourne Zoo and who knows where I'll be working next.

As part of WRS I have been given the opportunity to work and learn with Melbourne Carpet Specialists (MCS) on Fridays. I've been working with them for the past 4 weeks during which I have been getting paid for my time (not bad getting paid during school!). We learn new skills such as punctuality, work ethics, and responsibility. During my time with MCS I've been going to different houses with one or two of the employees and learning how to lay carpet as we work. We get allocated a house to do then after we have done that we get to go home, so the length of the workday varies depending on job size and work speed. It’s been great, and hopefully I can continue for the rest of the year.
