Careers

First term is officially finished and it has been a busy one for the Careers Team.

We have enjoyed getting to know our Year 12 students better through Careers Conversations and hope these have been a positive experience for them.

School holidays are a great time to start to do some serious research on career aspirations for the future. During the next few terms there will be a lot of talk about university and TAFE courses for 2024 but some students will also be considering employment and Gap year options.

Gap Year Options

 What is a gap year?

Traditionally a gap year was taken by Year 12 students who deferred their university studies for 12-months. Now gap years are also taken by students who would like to delay their TAFE or university studies or apprenticeships.

What are the benefits of taking a gap year?

There are many benefits for young people including the following:

Financial: save money to fund future study/training.

Career development: complete a traineeship, TAFE course, volunteering etc., before starting university studies. This may improve your graduate employment prospects and give you practical employment skills.

Take a break: if you’re feeling burnt out from study, taking a break may be beneficial for your mental wellbeing.

Time to firm up your future goals: if you’re feeling unsure about your study or training plans, a gap year may give you time to explore your goals, attend open days, participate in work or training related to your interests, and give you more time to make sure the course or training you want to do in the future is right for you.

EXAMPLES OF GAP YEAR OPPORTUNITIES

Most of these locations will be within educational settings, either primary or secondary. Trainees will complete certificates in a range of fields whilst completing their traineeship. Certificate course examples include but not limited to:  Business, Education Support, IT, and Sports and Rec. These traineeships are advertised in schools around August with interviews happening in September. Keep an eye on Senior Secondary Careers TEAMS Page or COMPASS for information for the 2024 year.

WILL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE REPLACE CERTAIN JOBS?

Chat GPT has recently been launched and this has increased online ‘chatter’ about the impact of artificial intelligence and automation on jobs and how this will impact young people.

When we look at huge changes resulting from automation in the past (e.g., the industrial revolution), we know that there is usually a period of change to tasks, skills and jobs and that whilst some jobs become obsolete or the demand lessons, other jobs are usually created.

In terms of AI, for people who are tech savvy, programs like Chat GPT and Microsoft Copilot will have a beneficial impact on their jobs in occupations like business administration, business analytics, marketing, content creation, research, and finance.

It may have a detrimental impact on occupations like copywriting, editing, and strategic planning as people who are tech savvy and know how to utilise the functions of these programs may have a lesser need to engage with people who provide these services.

What does this mean for you?

It's crucial to recognise that AI is a permanent part of our technological landscape. We've already witnessed the launch of game-changing AI programs this year, and as this sector presents a lucrative opportunity for entrepreneurs, we can expect to see a steady stream of new programs in 2023 and beyond.

Not all occupations will be impacted, but if you are planning to move into an occupation that will be, it’s essential you understand what skills you will need to be able to keep up with changes in workplace tasks.

Workplaces will adapt to new technologies as they evolve and you will need to as well. Skills like digital literacy, understanding ethics, problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, adaptability and technical skills will be essential.

JOBS IN ROBOTICS & AI

The team at Careers with STEM has written the following article for students interested in exploring careers in this exciting industry.

Seven career and study pathways in robotics in AI

“With the increasing accessibility of free AI platforms, fresh grads with AI skills are in serious demand. In Australia, just over 20% of startups say AI is relevant to what they do, and by 2030 we we'll need an extra 161,000 AI specialists to fill yet-to-be advertised jobs. Not sure where to start with your studies? Check our list of real-life AI role models doing incredible, innovative things in areas like machine learning, language, space, wildlife conservation and healthcare” http://bit.ly/42uZZse

INTERESTED IN STUDYING BUSINESS?

Not sure where to start or what business specialisations will suit you? If you decide to study a business degree at university, you will choose a specialisation – this is a called a major

Monash University has developed an excellent website that enables you map your ‘business personality’ to business majors. You can explore the site at www.monash.edu/business/business-explorer
