Learning Updates

- School of Innovation

Term 2 is off to an action-packed start

Term 1 flew by and we have started Term 2 with a bang, with all year levels focusing on incredible and varied projects and inquiries for this term. Term 1 had a significant focus on learning and developing our learning assets (collaborator, thinker, communicator, self-manager and researcher) and our school expectations (Always do our best; Help others succeed and Respect everyone and everything), testing (such as NAPLAN and other measures) and The Resilience Project.

There has already been so much to acknowledge and celebrate this year, and we are looking forward to an action-packed, positive and productive Term 2!

We will continue to bring you information, examples and snapshots of what is being undertaken in classes and year levels. We thank you for continuing to work and collaborate with us as we mentor and develop your young person.

Contacting the college

To assist parents/carers in making contact with the most appropriate person at St Anne’s College, we ask that they contact their child's Pastoral Group Leader as their first port of call, as they are the conduit between school and home.

Parents/carers who need to make contact with their child throughout the day, please contact the college office as students are not permitted to use their phones. This also assists us in best supporting you and your family.

iPads

Please remind your child to check their iPad and ensure that it is charged each day in preparation for classes and the school day as per the college's ICT agreement. If the iPad is damaged or missing any items, please make contact with your child’s Pastoral Group Leader so we can follow up and assist.

Reflection and recap of end of Term 1 and commencement of Term 2

Year 7

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Year 7s have been reviewing their knowledge of time. They have made and shared clocks with their buddies and helped them understand the different parts of a clock. They have investigated how to convert time from 12- to 24-hour and have looked at how to read a timetable.

Religious Education

In Religious Education, Year 7 students have been completing their assessment, 'How do I belong?'

English

In English, Year 7 students have been reading 'Storm Boy'. Last week they finished watching the movie and completed a Venn diagram comparing the similarities and differences between the movie and the novel. Students then began working on their assessments. For their assessment they are completing a Novel - One Pager.

Science

In Science, Year 7 students completed a data collection activity and then drew a graph from their results. For the second part of the lesson we practised writing up a science experiment. Last week we looked at how many teaspoons of salt it takes to make an egg float.

End-of-term reflection

During the last week of Term 1, Year 7 students were asked to reflect on their first term at St Anne's College. Here are some of the words they used to describe their first term: exciting, stressful, overwhelming, pleasant, chaotic, okay, nice, creative, noisy, new, confusing, alright, open, unusual, happy, chaos, boring, hard, quiet, scary, busy, anxious, interesting, rapid, good, crazy, different, joyful, fun.

Year 8

Year 8s spent an enormous amount of time looking into the Vikings in Term 1 and a lot of students built some amazingly creative ships. Year 8s have been incredibly creative in this space with posters, shipbuilding and trading cards.

The entire cohort improved out of sight in Mathematics during the term; everyone achieved an improved result in their most recent test (Geometric Reasoning).

Students finished their English essays and the level of writing for some students is quite impressive.

Students attended a Digitech talk about cyberbullying, hosted by Optus. They have been discussing mental health as a topic in Health classes and have been respectful and insightful throughout each lesson. They completed presentations on a chosen mental health illness.

They have also created picture story books in AusLan.

Year 8s have been looking at the interactions between the earth, moon and sun in Science and were asked to produce a piece of work that explained some of these interactions. Stop motion videos were among the creative work produced.

Year 9

Term 1

During Term 1, Year 9s focused on their identity and culture through their inquiry, 'Each of us has a story!' Students investigated themselves and who they are, their background, heritage and aspects of their identity that they are still developing.

Stereotypes were explored and broken through the student version of the ABC show 'You Can't Ask That!' Episodes of the show focused on Indians, Muslims, Italians, teenage girls, coeliacs and many more.

Our awesome Year 9s also wrote autobiographies, finishing with their hopes, dreams and aspirations. We expect big things out of our Year 9s and will push them towards success in any endeavour they pursue!

Additionally last term we had fantastic participation in the Swimming Carnival. Unfortunately Cooper House came third, but all had a great time!

Finally, a massive congratulations to the Year 9 group on their final NAPLAN testing. Everyone did their best and we are keen to see how our 9s shaped up against the rest of the state.

Term 2

The Year 9, Term 2 Global Learning project is an exciting opportunity for students to develop their entrepreneurial skills, financial mathematics knowledge and business-economics learning. The project involves small groups of students collaborating to create a small business with a budget of $50. This encourages creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as students must work together to develop a feasible business idea that is within their budget. One of the key benefits of this project is that students improve their speaking and listening abilities. They must present their business proposal in a 'Shark Tank' style format, where they pitch their idea to a panel of judges.

Another exciting aspect of this project is that students are required to obtain a loan to fund their small business from local businesses. This teaches students about financial responsibility and the importance of managing debt, loans and interest. Students must also consider the profitability of their business idea and ensure that they are able to pay back their loan after their business runs on Market Day.

The final component of the project involves selling their product or service at Market Day. This gives students the opportunity to put their business ideas into practice and test their marketing and sales skills. Community members are invited to attend Market Day, which provides students with a real-world experience of running their business.

Please feel free to come along to Market Day on Tuesday, June 13, between 11:15am and 1:00pm.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project is that the profits from student-led businesses are then pooled to purchase something for the common good of the college. This encourages students to think beyond their individual businesses and consider the broader impact of their efforts. It also provides a sense of community and collaboration as students work together in their small groups as well as a whole cohort to achieve a common goal.

Overall, the Year 9, Term 2 Global Learning project is an excellent opportunity for students to develop a range of skills and knowledge that will be valuable in their future endeavours. The project encourages creativity, critical thinking, financial responsibility and community involvement, all while providing a fun and engaging learning experience for students.
