Learning Updates -

School of Wonder

Busy, fun and exciting term ahead

Welcome to Term 2! I hope you all had a restful and peaceful break with loved ones. We hit the term running, with camp preparations, assembly and lots of learning.

Assembly

Our first assembly for the term was held on Monday, May 8, led by 3/4MK. There will be another two School of Wonder (SOW) assemblies this term, on May 22 and June 7, at 9:05am.

Cross Country

SOW will run a cross country event on Thursday, May 11, at 2:00pm. This event is a celebration of participation and children are encouraged to wear their house colors. All children are expected to participate and may run, jog, skip, dance or walk their way around the oval!

Foundation to Year 2 children will complete one lap of our college oval and Years 3 and 4 children will complete two laps. This event is an opportunity for all of our children to come together, participate and support each other. We encourage families to join us in supporting the children.

Camp - Years 3 and 4

Year 3/4 camp is in Week 6, Monday, May 29 to Wednesday, May 31, at Alexandra Adventure Resort. We are really excited to be going on camp this year with the children. Camp is part of the whole school experience, with the main focus in i-Time being camp preparation, with children exploring what the camp experience will be. A big thank you to all the parents who have inquired about volunteering on camp; this enthusiasm is appreciated, however this is not required at this stage as we have the staff needed for camp this time. We would like to remind parents that camp permission is due on PAM, and the dietary requirements form and camp medication authority form are also due via email to Learning Mentor Marian Segrave at msegrave@sackialla.catholic.edu.au so we can notify the camp of numbers and get everything organised. We really look forward to your child having this experience and know that most children are also excited. Please feel free to speak with your child's Learning Mentor about any concerns/questions you may have about camp.

Sacramental Program

The St Mel's Parish Sacramental Program continues this term with candidates preparing for their Confirmation.

Important dates to remember in the coming weeks are:

May 8-14: Confirmation - Our Time Together Two home session to be completed.

May 18: Confirmation - Our Time Together Three, St Anne's College, 6:30pm

This is an exciting and special time for our candidates and we wish them well as they prepare for their Confirmation and First Holy Communion on May 28.

Foundation - Term 2

This term our overarching Inquiry focus is ‘Our community’. We will be inquiring into the roles and responsibilities that everybody has in our community to ensure it works effectively. This includes our own roles and responsibilities as competent, dynamic citizens in our community. We will also investigate the roles and responsibilities of other members of our community that we are interested in such as emergency services, shop keepers, hairdressers, teachers, bakers and farmers.

In Literacy we are learning how to segment and blend sounds, identify commonly used words, identify parts of a sentence, build oral language skills, use correct letter formation and record the sounds we hear in words.

In Mathematics we are continuing to build on our knowledge of numbers from zero to 30, order events and days of the week, understand the duration of events, collect and order data, and begin to investigate addition and subtraction.

In Religious Education we are learning about prayer, God’s love and our church.

In The Resilience Project we are focusing on friendship and how to be a good friend, including sharing, manners and being grateful for our friends.

Years 1 and 2 - Term 2

The 1/2 Inquiry topic this term is 'How do we organise ourselves?', with a focus on

responsibility and societal responsibilities. The topic delves into understanding how

community members positively impact the world and explores people in our community

who have responsibilities. The children will investigate how responsible choices impact the community, individual roles in our community and how responsible choices have an impact. We will have members of our community visit our school and speak with the children about their role and their responsibilities. Last week, the children were very excited to have Learning Mentor Lauren Hall's brother, Dr Sheldon Hall, visit and speak to them about his role and his responsibilities as a doctor at GV Health.

Years 3 and 4 - Term 2

Years 3 and 4 children have settled back into routine for Term 2. We are all very excited for our upcoming camp that is happening in Week 6. Our inquiry for the first five weeks, in the lead-up to camp, will be focused on camp preparation. The children will be putting together their own ‘camp booklet’ with all of the information they are seeking about camp. We will also have a collaboration focus as we tie in The Resilience Project and Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum activities for team building, resilience, empathy and gratitude.

Our Literacy focus has begun with the implementation of literacy circles, where we have been exploring poetry.

For Numeracy, we have been exploring multiplication and division processes through a number of hands-on and tailored learning experiences to suit the needs of each learner. We are also incorporating ‘maths inquiry’ where children investigate using task cards to explore concepts under the theme ‘Around the World’. This is something the children loved doing last term!

Clothing needed for Drama classes

In the School of Wonder we have started our Drama unit and we are looking for items of

clothing to help the children build characters. We are asking parents/carers if they are able to donate hats, glasses and clothes the children can use. We are not looking for costumes like superheroes or princesses etc. as I would love for children to use their imaginations. Items of traditional clothing from different cultures would also be fantastic. Items can be handed to me in the School of Wonder.
