STEM Excursion - Resources Technology

On Tuesday 4 April, the year 6 students went to the Resources Technology Showcase at the Perth Convention Centre. We started off marvelling at the size of the machinery parked at the Supreme Court gardens before making our way to the Convention Centre itself for the exhibit.

Once inside, the students were wowed by the incredible projects that Australian companies were undertaking. Students were given the opportunity to experience virtual reality through the RAC rescue helicopter, learn about the space research and satellites built at Curtin University, code robots and so much more. In particular, many students and teachers were amazed at the exhibits being put on by other primary schools around Western Australia, showcasing their incredible STEM programs. It was a wonderful experience for our students, that will hopefully spark a lifelong interest in STEM.

Thank you to our parent helpers who came along to the excursion, it would not have been as successful without your help and support.

Hazel Orme Walking Excursion

The children in Rooms 5 and 6 walked to Hazel Orme Kindy to say hello to their previous teachers, and to have a look at and play on their FABULOUS newly revamped playground!

We were very lucky to have some parents assist us on the walk. It was very exciting to see the joyful faces of children who have siblings at the ‘Big School’ and to meet lots of new little people. We had a lovely play, morning tea and made it back to school before lunch.

Thank you to the staff at Hazel Orme for inviting us – we will be back!

Positive Behaviour Support

White Gum Valley Primary School is a PBS School - you may be wondering ‘What is PBS’?

It stands for: POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

We have a very dedicated and committed team that believe children need clear and consistently positive instruction and support both academically and with behaviour as well.

Our Purpose statement: The White Gum Valley Primary School PBS Team aims to enhance the current Behaviour Management Policy into a policy that explicitly teaches and reinforces positive behaviours.

This will result in a common and consistent K-6 approach that will provide clear behaviour expectations and enable White Gum Valley Primary School students to feel a sense of belonging and TAKE PRIDE in themselves, the school and the wider community.

We began our PBS journey in 2017. Zones of Regulation links very closely to the PBS framework. It focusses on the social and emotional wellbeing of our students and empowering them with the ability to effectively express their feelings.

Instead of having a list of school rules, we have three whole school behaviour expectations of being respectful, being organised and being safe. Staff explicitly teach and model these expectations in and out of the classroom.

Cricket Carnival

On Wednesday, 27 March, White Gum Valley Primary School travelled to Winterfold Primary School to participate in a Cricket carnival. The boys team which included Max, Gus, Joel, Dane, Harry, Maurice, Callum and Atticus won all of their games against North Fremantle, East Hamilton Hill and Hilton.

The girls team, consisting of Charley, Sarah, Nieve, Bea, Kira, Abi, Billie and Meg, also won all their games against North Fremantle, East Hamilton Hill and Hilton.

Then the mixed team which had Oscar, Leon, Isaac, Jarrah, Theo, Caroline, Tama and Zahara won their first two games against East Hamilton Hill and drew in the final against North Fremantle, leaving all of our teams undefeated so far for the day.

In the finals the boys played Hilton and played in an exciting match eventually winning by 22 runs. The Girls played against Winterfold and came out the victors by around 90 runs. Both teams are going to the regionals in Term 4.

Well done White Gum Valley and thanks to teachers and parents for helping out.

By Harry and Abi.

Constable Care Excursion

On Friday  31 March, the year 5 students were lucky enough to go to the Constable Care safety centre in Maylands. The students started off with a demonstration of bike safety, including how to make sure their bikes are safe to ride. Next, they had a quiz on road signs and what to do at each sign .

After that, half of the students put their knowledge and skills into action as they rode bicycles around the outside course. It was wonderful to see them following our road rules and being ROS on the roads. The other half of the students were tested in a heated road safety quiz. It covered topics from possible sounds they could hear on the road to what actions they could take to ensure they are as safe as possible on the road. After recess they swapped activities.

A special thank you one of our parent's, Sherry, who won the excursion for the students. White Gum Valley really appreciates all of extra effort that our parents and community put into giving our students extra opportunities.

Attendance Matters

Congratulations to Sarah from Year 6 who won the individual attendance Raffle for the past fortnight.

Congratulations also to Room 2 and Room 6 who each won the class attendance competition and looked after the Fremantle Indigenous Guernsey for a week.

Many thanks to parents who have returned attendance letters, which have been sent out; it’s important that reasons are given for any absences.

Did you know that 1 missed day per fortnight is equal to 4 weeks in a year and a whole year across the school life of a student?

Every day really does count.
