Year 2 Remote Learning Fun

The Year 2 students have been enjoying a variety of activities online during Remote Learning.

The highlight has been our current Unit of Inquiry, ‘Sharing the Planet’. The Year 2s have been learning about a variety of minibeasts and the process of change they go through in their life cycle. Mr Bray has shared many videos of his bee hives in his back yard and the students have made many bee observations while viewing the coming and goings of the bees. They have also learnt the various parts of the bee and drawn detailed labelled diagrams.

We have been watching the life cycle of a mealworm unfold before our eyes. The students have learnt that the life cycle of a mealworm is egg, larva, pupa and adult. They had to make predictions about what they thought the mealworms were going to turn into at the end of the process. We had various guesses and some students were accurate in guessing a beetle.

We have also learnt about the Lord Howe Island stick insect and the story of how it nearly became extinct on the island due to black rats. The students heard how two surviving stick insects that were found on Ball’s Pyramid off Lord Howe Island, were taken to the Melbourne Zoo and successfully bred to try an increase the population and introduce them back to their natural habitat on the island.

Unfortunately we were unable to attend our excursion to the Melbourne Museum and Imax, but were lucky enough to go on a virtual excursion of the museum. We also viewed some unboxing of various minibeasts that are stored in the museum in the collections area.

The students have learnt how to draw detailed labelled diagrams of various minibeasts and life cycles. The students enjoyed choosing a minibeast to research and complete their Information Report. They had to write about the physical features, habitat and food of their minibeasts and write several interesting facts. They also included a drawing of the life cycle and a labelled diagram. It was interesting to hear the students share their Information Reports and listen to the knowledge they had gained.

This week the students will be preparing their oral presentations based on the minibeast they chose. They will be writing their own cue cards and will present their presentation  online to the rest of their class.
