Science Week Bush Tucker Experience

The theme for National Science Week this year is ‘Food: Different by Design.’ Students were given the opportunity to participate in a Bush Tucker Workshop hosted by Marissa from Bindi Bindi Dreaming. Native thyme, lemon myrtle, bush mint and sea parsley are some of the locally sourced herbs that students experimented with while preparing a shared banquet.

Thank you to Marissa for visiting the College and sharing with us her wealth of knowledge of the local environment and Noongar culture.

HASS - Year 11 Geography Excursion

On Wednesday the Year 11 Geography students set off on fieldtrip to explore the global interconnections of various industries in the Swan Valley. Our main unit of study revolves around the spatial distribution of production and consumption of wine, so it was great to get some experiential learning at Upper Reach Winery. On a guided tour of the winery, students learnt about various processes of production and the market dynamics involved in the industry. We also visited Yahava Koffee works and Margaret River Chocolate Company to explore the global interconnections of these industries. The trip also featured various fieldwork activities to consolidate our Geography Skills and we examined Perth’s Urban Morphology as a prelude to Yr 12 ATAR Geography. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and enriching excursion. Special thanks to Mrs Bell for joining the Geography class and providing great insight on the various concepts that we were studying.

SPORT

NAS Athletics

Congratulations to all our Years 7-10 students who have been selected to represent the College in the 2021 NAS Athletics carnival on Tuesday 24 August. Whilst students will be competing against athletes from other NAS schools (Sacred Heart, Newman, Chisholm and Servite), there is no scoring on the day or champion boy/girl competition. This day provides an opportunity for students to improve their result from the Interhouse carnival to help secure their selection in the ACC A-Division Athletics team.

NAS Athletics team information

  • Students may wear their sports uniform to school.
  • Selected students will attend Period 1 on the day and then travel by bus to the HBF Athletics stadium.
  • All team members are asked to wear the College athletics top (these can be purchased from the Uniform Shop).
  • Students in field and track events are encouraged to ensure they are at their track events as they will run strictly to time. Field events can be completed after track events.
  • Approximate times of events for track and field can be found in the NAS Athletics program below.

Athletics Training

Thank you to all the students showing a passion for athletics and making it down to our morning training sessions. All students are welcome to attend the College morning training sessions to improve their athletics skills. Last year, John XXIII College achieved our team goal and stayed in the ACC A-Division Athletics Carnival. This year our aim is to do the same and hopefully some more!

Training takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00-8:00am in the lead up to the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 15 September.

Also a big well done to our junior competitors on the day who came very close to making the semi-finals for their divisions. A big thank you to all the parents for the early morning drop-offs and support along the way. Stay tuned for next weeks newsletter with the results of our girls who competed today.
