Principal's message
Dear MGSC Community
Congratulations to Diana Gilbert and Lauren Caridi who will be presenting at the Quantum Victoria - Authentic Learning in the 21st Century Conference about the three-day year 9 Design Thinking project run at the end of term 2. As part of this STEAM project, year 9 students were set a project to build a sustainable suburb. They worked in class groups, where they planned, designed and constructed a scaled mini suburb to meet the criteria and needs of the local council and the community. Design Thinking required our students to negotiate and collaborate with their peers. These are essential skills for the workplaces now and into the future. In my visit to the workshop what I saw was engagement and enjoyment. The presentations at the end of the three-days were confidently delivered and it was such an affirmation of their collective efforts.
More on the STEAM front, one of our enthusiastic science teachers, Elizabeth Leong, has secured a grant supported by Walt Disney Australia to enter our school in the FIRST Lego League Challenge. The grant covers our entry fee ($570) plus a new SPIKE Prime Lego kit ($600). We have a team of 14 students from Robotic Club supported by teacher mentors Elizabeth and William Verimieff that will be participating in this challenge which culminates with a competition day planned for November at Melbourne Girls' College. This year’s challenge is Cargo Connect and the team needs to prepare a presentation and code their robot to perform specified tasks relating to the theme.
Many thanks to Carol Duggan for stepping into the role as Acting Principal during my long service leave. I am grateful that I was able to spend the time with my oldest daughter, Jessica, who returned from living in London. Whilst there was a lockdown on over my leave period, there were many walks, chat and cooking that we could do. There is nothing like having family around you.
Carol welcomed Detta Gordon, our newest Assistant Principal in the last newsletter. I would like to welcome Detta to MGSC as well. Detta is an experienced and knowledgeable Assistant Principal and we are enjoying working with her. Detta is overseeing years 7, 8 and 9 and is supporting the teams in those year levels.
Anne-Claire Brunet have announced the safe arrival of their baby boy Téo Serge, born on 21 July. We wish her all the best in her family leave.
As I write this Victoria has gone into lockdown and the students and staff are working remotely. Please rest assured that the staff at MGSC are very experienced and responsive and your daughters will be in good hands. Classes will operate online as per usual.
Please take care of yourselves. I look forward to seeing the student return to school after the lockdown concludes.
All the best
Linda Brown
