Reading-  At the start of this term, students revisited the different aspects and  expectations of the reading lesson and added more interest books to their classroom library. Throughout the term students have engaged in class discussions, ‘read alouds’, turn and talk and oral language experiences to support their letter identification and high frequency word knowledge. During this term, students continued to work on the comprehension strategy of previewing and predicting, as well as retelling. Students learnt to retell well known fairytales and stories they have read while at school and during remote learning.

Writing-  At the start of this term, the prep students finished off their unit on information reports. The prep students then focused on narrative writing and recounts. The students started out by creating their own personal narrative which included a beginning, middle and end. The students continued to write a recount about an experience by including the who, what, where and when this experience occurred.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, this term prep students continued to engage in the 100 days of school routine. This included keeping track of each school day until students reached100 days. Some ways of tracking the days included, using a 100 ‘s chart, counting icy pole sticks, marking a blank 100’s frame and marking a calendar. We were able to reach the 100 days of school mark in Week 3 and celebrated excitedly as a cohort dressing up to the theme of 100.

Throughout the term, students have learnt about three topics which included number sense, capacity and addition and subtraction. During the number sense topic, students focused on connecting the name and numeral up to 20.  During the capacity unit, students identified objects that were heavier and lighter and compared them to see which object was heavier and which object was lighter. During the addiction and subtraction unit, students learnt how to add and subtract to find the total.

 Inquiry

We began the Term in Inquiry by learning about what history means and identifying some things from our own family history. We celebrated and discussed our special family celebrations and traditions. There were so many amazing Christmas traditions shared by the Preps! I was so impressed with the detail students were able to share about their favourite family traditions! We have also worked hard in Prep this term to include more details and colours in our pictures. I have been so proud of everyone’s efforts when creating such masterpieces.

We then moved to remote learning. We continued our Inquiry work through the Specialists and Inquiry grids. I am so proud of the resilience and effort the students have demonstrated through this difficult time. I want to thank all the students and their parents/carers for their support and hard work.

Hoping to welcome everyone back very soon! Take care.

 ART

The Preps had an excellent start to the term, exploring shape! They made collages and paintings inspired by the artwork of Spanish painter, Joan Miró. We practiced naming and describing shapes, and making lots of different types of shapes.

As we moved into online learning, we began experimenting with art materials that we might find around the home, such as spices mixed with water and found objects we could use. Students were introduced to Melbourne based artist Charlie Sofo, who turns to everyday objects and moments in the creation of his work. Another exciting challenge involved students choosing a famous artwork to ‘make a copy’ of – of which there were many expressive and talented submissions. We welcomed the beginning of warmer weather by observing and drawing local flowering plants. Being online has also provided a fun opportunity to play art games and quizzes on platforms like Tate Kids. We will finish up Term 3 with a virtual excursion and a ‘creating with care’ activity. I have been delighted to see the artwork you have created this term Preps. Thank you for your creative efforts. I cannot wait to spend more time learning and making together next term!

MUSIC

In Music, Grade Prep students continued to explore playing different rhythms with percussion instruments. They worked on consolidating playing ‘ta’ (crotchet) and ‘ti ti’ (quavers). Students also continued to read the notation and symbols that represented these rhythms. As we entered into remote learning, students were given tasks on our class dojo learning platform. Activities consisted of revising playing rhythms, revising tempo (fast and slow) and pitch (high and low). Students were introduced to beat by feeling the pulse of a song. This included listening to music and marching to it. Students will continue to consolidate this musical concept in future learning to support their abilities in writing their own rhythms over different beats. Well done on your learning this term Grade Prep! Stay well and safe.

PE- SPORT

This term in Physical Education, students began working on their kicking skills. They completed activities in learning how to kick a soccer ball. Students worked on positioning their bodies correctly by using their non-kicking foot to step forward and using the in-step of their opposite foot to kick. Students completed activities which required target practise by kicking a soccer ball in pairs with their peers and also kicking towards a soccer net for goal practise. As we entered remote learning students were given activities on the Class Dojo learning platform. These activities consisted of practising throwing using an overarm technique, kicking a ball and catching. Well done on your efforts this term Grade Prep! Stay well and safe.

STEM

Throughout Term 3 Prep students have been introduced to the Physical Science strand through onsite learning and through a weekly activity during remote learning. Our focus has been on movement and the factors that enable objects to move, such as shape and size, and how we can move in a variety of ways using our own bodies!

Through demonstrations, video clips, drawings and experiments, students have presented their learning and showed their understanding of how things move in our world!
