Words at Work Incursion

Last Monday (6 September), Year 10 students participated in a virtual Words at Work Guest Speaker Incursion. Professor Kate Burridge from Monash University delivered a talk about Language Change and careers in Linguistics, which was a wonderful opportunity for our students. Please see student reflection below.

Professor Burridge is a linguist specialising in slang. She spoke to us via video call on Monday September 6. She gave us an interesting insight into linguistics and how it is used in everyday life.

We discovered that the use of linguistics is much more common than you may think. It is used in law, court cases, movies, books and even in creating languages used in Harry Potter and many other famous movies. The most interesting piece of information I found was that we associate words with shapes. We were given two words, maluma and tekete. We had to use them to name shapes. Which ones would you use for each shape?

Thank you to Professor Burridge for giving up your time to speak to us. You gave us an informative insight into your career and the art of linguistics.
