Kitchen Update

Last week our students in grade 5/6 tasted food from the early 1800s. As part of their inquiry based learning about perspectives of Australian History we sourced some recipes that convicts and early settlers would have consumed.

We had a very basic soup made from broth and tapioca and as an accompaniment we had soda bread. The soup had a very gelatinous texture and the bread was very heavy and very bland in taste. For dessert we had a sweet homity pudding made with polenta and currants, this was very dense but sweet.

Most students reflected how lucky they were to have the foods and variety that we have today. They could not believe that this soup and bread may have been consumed for both lunch and dinner over several days. More importantly they could not believe there was no alternative on offer!

Miss Whyte’s class  made a delicious Mexican Rice Salad with Corn Dippers. This is a simple recipe that is a great alternative to a sandwich in their lunchbox.  It was really great to see many students try tomato or avocado for the first time discover that they actually liked it.

Garden Update

During the last couple of weeks, the 5 /6 students have been making the most of their time in the garden. We have now pruned all the fruit trees, planted new potatoes and cress in the hot house and collected most of the loose bricks in the garden. In the photos you can see the students trying to identify different herbs from our garden just using their sense of smell. Bronte and Jess weeded the wicking beds and Levi and Khoby collected all the sticks for the bonfire. A shout out to Jake for doing the share table on Wednesday, he offered to help set up and run it in front of the office due to bad weather.
