Project Compassion Week 3

During this week of Lent, we learn how the local Caritas organization in Zimbabwe assisted Priscilla to learn conservation farming skills to grow drought-resistant crops and start poultry farming to support her family during the current food crisis.

Priscilla's Story

Priscilla lives in the Hwange district in Zimbabwe with her husband, Charles, and her two grandsons. In Hwange, the impacts of climate change are exacerbating food insecurity in vulnerable communities. This can be seen in the erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged dry spells, poor agricultural soils and high temperatures in the region.

“We had plenty of rains at first but as time has gone by, the rains have become erratic and hence the yields have been reduced,” Priscilla said.

Priscilla tells her story in the video below:

Catholic Social Teachings

We encourage all families to donate to the Caritas Australia Project Compassion appeal so that we can play our part in helping others here in Australia and other parts of the world. In doing so we are living out the Catholic Social Teachings of Preferential Option for the Poor and Dignity of the Human Person.

In the words of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop:

"Never see a need without doing something about it."

Prayer for International Women's Day

God, whose love and goodness

gathers us in:

we pray for women all over the world,

especially those challenged

by poverty and other injustice.

Stir us to know women’s dignity.

Quieten us to listen to women’s voices.

Awaken us to see women’s realities.

Strengthen us to stand for women’s rights.

Fill us with hope to make

a better future together.

Amen.
