Dear Parents / Carers,
At Rowville Primary School 23 percent of our students have a family background from an overseas country. Celebrating the rich diversity of all students is something that is embedded into our classroom practices each and every day. While fostering a sense of belonging in the classroom happens daily, there are some special dates throughout the school calendar, such as Harmony Day, that provide us with a further opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of both our amazing school and country.
Harmony Day, which is held on the 21st of March every year, is widely celebrated in the community and at schools around the country. This significant day coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is a time to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and promote inclusiveness, with its key message being ‘Everyone Belongs’.
This week our Ceremonies and Special Events Working Party were passionate about celebrating cultural diversity in our school. They read a number of different stories about diversity and supported the Foundation–Year 2 students to create figures that were unique to them and represent how we are all different.
Importance of Talk
I encourage parents to talk with your child about their school day. It shows them that you’re interested in what’s going on in their life. This may be a chat in the car on the way home, while you’re getting dinner ready or before bedtime. Research has shown that this interest can boost a child’s mental health, happiness and wellbeing. It can also have a very positive effect on your child’s behaviour and achievement and shows your child that you value school and education.
Ways to Ask your Child “How was your Day?”
ANZAC Day is Tuesday 25 April. ANZAC badges are currently available for sale at the office for $1.00.
Kind regards,
