Term 1 Week 6 2022 - Friday 10th March

What have we been up to?

We have officially made it halfway through the term!! It has been wonderful seeing all the students make new friends, settle into their new classrooms and begin to show some amazing work. Well done! It has been a busy couple of weeks in Grade 1/2. The classroom teachers have been in and out of the classroom but all the students have shown great resilience and confidence. The Grade 1 students have been completing Online English Interviews with their teachers.

The last two weeks students have been continuing with the Little Learners Love Literacy Program. All the students have really settled into the routine and have loved meeting their character each week and learning the sound each letter makes.

The past two weeks the yellow group have been introduced to Ally Alligator and Peter Penguin, the red group have met Oscar Octopus and Daisy Dog, and finally, the blue group have learnt about Kylie Koala and Wilbur Whale.

Students have had the chance to start borrowing books in the library and using their 5 Finger Rule to choose books that are just right for them. In writing over the last couple of weeks, students have had the opportunity to independently plan and write a Recount about their weekend. During Maths, students have been working towards trusting the count by using games, posters and independent work to build their confidence in subitising.

Last week in science, students went on a bug hunt looking for different bugs or living creatures around the school yard. They have also been enjoying learning new signs in AUSLAN. The past couple of weeks the students have learnt the signs for different colours, everyday signs and family members. During week 5, students met with their 3/4 buddies for a scavenger hunt around the school.

What is coming up?

Reading

Over the next fortnight the 1/2 students will continue to develop their reading fluency by practising their independent reading skills. We are beginning to focus on fiction and non-fiction texts.

Writing

The students are moving on from Recounts this week and beginning to develop their understanding of Information Texts. This week students will explore the purpose, structure and language used as we write an Information Text as a whole class. Students will then work towards writing their own Information Text.

Maths

Students are being introduced to place value. They will be starting this concept by focusing on two digit numbers. They will investigate the place value of tens and ones using MAB, Unifix and Place Value Charts.

Inquiry & Science

In the coming two weeks, students will be focusing on recognising their own

strengths and taking charge of their own actions in Inquiry. Science will allow students to continue learning about the ‘Bug Safari” by learning how to care for living things.
