Mandarin Newsletter – Week 7 Term 1 2023

Junior Level

Although for many Prep students, it is the first time that they started learning Mandarin at school, the whole Prep class have been doing very well in exploring different aspects of the language. In the past few weeks, we have learnt the four tones in Mandarin along with the speaking and listening practices of the basic vowels and consonants. Student have also explored the writing of numbers from 1 to 10 using fundamental strokes in Chinese characters. We also played lots of learning games to help us read and speak the numbers in Chinese with a focus on its functional usage.

The Year 1/2 classes have been exploring and extending their learning around the topic of stationery and objects in the classroom. While learning the vocabulary, students learnt how to read and compare the different structures of Chinese characters as well as the order of strokes in character writing. Besides that, we also learnt the expression of ‘I have’ and ‘I don’t have’ in speaking practice and also explored using the complete sentence structure to describe someone that has or doesn’t have a specific item.

Middle Level

In Term 1, Year 3/4 students have been exploring the topic of occupations. Students learnt how to read and name different occupations in Mandarin as well as how to use the expressions of ‘want to be’ and ‘don’t want to be’ to discuss this topic with another person. Students also further enhanced their writing of Chinese characters with a better understanding of the common structures of Chinese characters as well as the Chinese fundamental strokes that form the Chinese characters.

Senior Level

During Term 1, Year 5/6 students have been learning how to tell and discuss their hobbies and interests in Mandarin using a complete sentence structure. Students have learnt how to use the expressions of ‘Do you like?’ and ‘I like/dislike’ along with the correct usage of different pronouns in Mandarin to talk about people’s preferences. We have also started learning the grammar of present continuous to describe the events and activities that are happening at the moment. As part of the cultural learning, we also discussed the videos of the famous Chinese vlogger Li Ziqi that display a mixture of the traditional and modern lifestyles in the rural areas of China.

Student Dance Club Newsletter – Week 7 Term 1 2023

Over the past few weeks in Term 1, we had many Year 3 to 4 students who officially joined the Student Dance Club this year. We have been exploring and practising the basic foundation moves in Hip-Hop and also learning a new group dance piece. Our Year 6 students Lucy, Yagmur, Alice and Cooper will also be presenting the Student Dance Club at the School Fete on 1st April performing a dance piece they have learnt in Term 4 last year. Currently, they have been doing extra rehearsals working in a dedicated manner to revive this dance piece.

You are more than welcome to come and join us at the School Fete for lots of fun and excitement, and also to support our very own Trinity student dancers, watching them showing off some cool moves on the day! ; )
