Whole School Expectation - Weekly Focus for Students

Manage impulsivity!

This is when I think before I do:

Should I be talking?

Have I followed an instruction?

Am I raising my hand and waiting for my name to be called

Am I using respectful body language?

Lunch Time Activities - Term 2, 2023

Once again we will be running lunchtime activities for the students in Term 2. These structured activities give students the opportunity to join in play where they feel connected and part of a group that share similar interests. We are blessed at St Joseph’s to have such dedicated, enthusiastic and talented staff at our school willing to share their time, skills and expertise with our students.

There are a number of activities and clubs on offer for students to participate in during Term 2. These activities will be facilitated by classroom teachers and conducted across the week, some open for specific levels of children others for anyone who is interested from Kindergarten to Year 6.

If your child would like to take part in these lunchtime activities during Term 2, please complete the form attached by Thursday 6th April. Please note that not all activities will run and that there is an expectation that your child will commit and attend the activity(ies) he/she has been allocated, as these will be part of our lunchtime teacher supervision roster.  If you have any questions please contact Mr Aguilera.

(If you have more than one child at the school, please complete a separate form for each student)

Library Lunch Time Play

Students K-6 have been making use of our amazing library space by engaging in structured play activities during break time. Mindful colouring, building challenges, board games, comic creating and reading have been just some of the wonderful activities available to students. Mrs Pirie has been showcasing new and donated books to our collections that have been covered by our wonderful parent helpers. Our library space continues to foster a love of books and an awareness of different genres and authors.

I like being indoors and choosing to read or colour. (Adam L Y4)
There are so many cool things to do and I loved building with the lego. (Will P Y3)

Student WEN Day

On Friday 24 March, four students from Year 5 (Lylah, Mikayla, Leo and Carter), along with Mrs Parker, attended the 2nd Student WEN Day, held at OLHC Rosemeadow. WEN stands for Wollongong Environmental Network. These students were recognised by their teachers for showing passion and commitment toward environmental matters within our school.

We each created a name tag to discuss with other students on the day. We chose to make ours from plastics we found around our school playgrounds as we feel these are a problem for our school community being so close to the ocean.

We had a great day learning about the wonderful environmental initiatives schools within our diocese are already doing, as well as spending some time planning for future actions. We listened to parts of Pope Francis' Laudato Si - his letter to all people of the world, encouraging us to be stewards of Creation and reminding us of our responsibility to protect this beautiful earth. Together the students wrote a prayer for Creation which will be shared at future school environmental liturgies.

We learned about the importance of the Five R's - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle. We repurposed a t-shirt and created a no-sew t-shirt bag!

We also had the opportunity to listen to Kerry, a guest speaker from Plastic Oceans Australasia and learn about the amazing work they do educating people all over the world about the dangers of plastics in our oceans.

Our day concluded with our students receiving a WEN badge which they will wear each day. This is to demonstrate that they are now ECO-Ambassadors and will continue to work with other students to build a cleaner school environment.
