Principals Message

Dear parents and carers,

I hope you have appreciated the wonderful rain just as I have. I know timing is not always the best for people depending on their needs, but this rain has been fabulous in my world.

Recently the School Advisory Council met for the first time this year. We welcomed new members Lisa Berges, Georgie Rothwell and Gemma Bunner. These parents bring a wealth of knowledge in regards to business and  fundraising among other things.

I would like to acknowledge our outgoing Chairperson, Lisa Davis. Lisa has been a great support and we thank her for the work she has done for our school. I also want to thank Justin Hobson for his involvement and help as a member.

It is with great sadness we acknowledge the passing of Mr Gary McSweeney. Gary was the first lay principal of St Xavier’s and was here in 1994,1995 and 1996. Gary was outstanding in his leadership and ability to drive school improvement. His passion for sport saw him serve on many NSW committees and teams.

After his time in Gunnedah, Gary went on to become the principal at St Edwards Tamworth where he served for 26 years. Recently Gary has been part of the CSO team who improve school facilities. He was a significant person in the refurbishment of St Xavier’s over the last few years. Gary knew how to make a deal that saw the school come out on top. His knowledge in this area was endless. He was the first person I called when the old library was going up in flames in 2019. I was distressed and he said, after making sure everyone was okay, “Darlin, that’s what insurance is for.” He then made sure the children of SXG were the priority during the process of claiming. He was a straight talker and I always knew what he was thinking!

I met Gary in 1994 and became firm friends with him and his wife Lisa. Our friendship continued as we each went on to have children and took great joy in watching each other's children grow into adults. He leaves a great legacy in Catholic education and has indeed touched the lives of many people in our Diocese and beyond. He was a true friend.

Regards

Jen Honner
