LEADERSHIP

YEAR 12

This week the members of the Senior Student Leadership Team were given the amazing opportunity to attend a conference run by Youth Leadership Academy Australia. We heard from many speakers including Will Massara, the young CEO of the company; Mandy Dante, the CEO of Flourish girl; Jasmine a 16-year-old who started her own newspaper and Mohamed Semra who founded Endeavour Youth Australia.

Listening to and interacting with these speakers allowed us to learn many lessons which we hope to apply to our leadership positions including the importance of owning your story, finding your source of confidence, feeding the courage and asking for help. We also gained new skills such as how to communicate effectively, how to best create change and how to be a supporter and peer.

As the conference included many other schools around Victoria, we were able to meet and connect with other young people and share ideas. This conference was extremely rewarding and we cannot wait for what 2023 will bring!

YAMAWAKI Exchange Students

Over the summer holidays I was able to go to Japan, and whilst over there I was lucky enough to meet up again with the Japanese exchange students we had had last year, in term 3. It was tricky organising to catch up because of my limited time and they were still in school, 6 days a week, but we were able to organise it for my last week in Shibuya, Tokyo after their school on a Saturday. We had a really great time and they showed me some really cool places that I wouldn’t have known were there. We went out for a lunch that is popular amongst teens and we also went to a photo booth that was packed and took some cute photos. It was really great to catch up with them after having not seen them in a long time, and we were sad to say goodbye. I hope to go back again soon and see them again!

FOOD CULTURE

Year 11s have enjoyed discovering how cuisines develop over time. After reading about Japan’s unique food culture they were happy to create their own gyozas and miso soup lunch. Delicious!

MRC

Our Book Clubs are off and running with the RAGE Book Club (Years 7-9) meeting every Monday lunchtime and the Senior Book Club (Years 10 -12) every second Thursday lunchtime.   The RAGE Book Club had a fun and entertaining Book Trivia Quiz which demonstrated the vast knowledge our students have on literature. The Senior Book Club had a share time on what they are reading at the moment and why they chose that book.

Australian Reading Hour

Next Thursday 9 March and Friday 10 March at lunchtime we will be participating in the “Australian Reading Hour”.  Australian Reading Hour is about taking some time out to unwind and escape into a book.

Bring your book & lunch.

Doors close at 12.15pm for reading time (30 glorious minutes each day)

International Women’s Day

The theme this year is “Embrace Equity”

Visit the MRC for wonderful resources of books and magazines inspired by this event and see the thought provoking display, well worth a look. Happy Reading!

EARTH AT ACADEMY

Last Friday, members of Earth at Academy were invited to attend Melbourne Catholic Girls College's annual moonlight cinema.

Before the screening, both MCG, and many other outside organisations concerned with environmental protection, held stalls, mingled and shared ideas.  Earth at Academy had a stall where we able to share our achievements of last and this year, giving the students a valuable chance to talk about what they have helped organise and participated in, as well as their motivations for taking environmental action. The Academy students also got involved with the Climate Superpowers stall, many of which having participated in the research project themselves.

The night ended with a screening of a movie under the moonlight, and alongside every other electrically power appliance used on the day, the movie was powered through the guests and student's involvement in hopping on a bike and producing energy through their pedaling.

Overall, everybody greatly enjoyed the moonlight cinema, and we have all returned with a wealth of new ideas and inspiration - we greatly look forward to next year's one, where Academy will hopeful have even more changes and ideas to share!
