NAGLE HOUSE

Junior Girls (Years 7-9)

A big start to 2023 with a very busy first term. The girls have been involved in afternoon activities and they love their shopping day. They usually return with a bag of goodies and have had a treat to eat.

They are to be complimented on the way they are socialising together in the common room, chatting, watching TV, and doing crafts and puzzles.

There has been a Year 7 MDCC Geography excursion and Maddie, Evie and Claire had a great day at Wee Jasper for their outdoor ed excursion.

In the sporting arena, Ainslie represented MDCC for soccer in Griffith, Laura, Lucy and Maddie C competed at the BISSA swimming carnival. Lucy has been selected for the state swimming competition at the end of March.

The girls enjoyed creating a birthday chart and they have had parent contributions of birthday cakes to share.

The senior girls have had hot and cold dorms, unwell and healthy moments, loud and quiet afternoon teas and suppers, busy study and nothing to do. All the norms of boarding life. And in all those different times the girls have remained positive and caring of each other. The sense of community within the senior girls continues to strengthen as they share laughter but also study and tough times. The fact that the girls attend two different schools also shows a great shared feeling of belonging within the MEBS Boarding and Nagle House. They are a group of strong, assertive, caring young women who will make a positive mark on their world wherever that ends up being.

It has been a busy term so far with swimming carnivals, athletics days, open nights, Boarders Mass and the outing to Wagga Beach which was postponed due to rain. All these have been interspersed through study programmes. A-Team tutoring continues to be in the background offering help and guidance not only with content to be understood but also in how to research and study. The Senior girls still need to be confident in their use of the expertise within A Team tutoring.

They will all enjoy the break, particularly the year 12’s as they do their countdown to the final exams.

Junior Boys (Years 7-9)

The junior boys have had a busy 1st Term and are eagerly awaiting the holiday break.

They have been involved in a number of school and Boarding activities which have kept them on their toes and led to a number of individual achievements.

Leading the way is Year 8 Boarder Thomas Grainger from Mater Dei who recently competed in the NSW Junior State Championship at Sydney Olympic Park, Aquatic Centre.

Thomas swam in 5 events and achieved  3 personal bests in the 50, 100 and 200 metres backstroke.

Thomas will soon compete in the NSW Combined Catholic College Swimming Championships at the Aquatic Centre.

Good Luck to the following boys - Charlie Patey, Sam Douglas, Archie Graham, Kai Stanmore and Eli Gooden who are trying out for the AFL Currie Cup Under 15s extended trials.

Harrison Crowe keeps himself busy with his weekly tennis schedule at Bolton Park and from all reports is steadily making a name for himself in the Tennis world.

On the music scene, Sam Thomsen will be part of the vocal ensemble in the upcoming ‘Live & Loud’ musical production.

Sam Thomsen and Harrison Crowe celebrated St Patrick's Day with Boarding Staff, wearing some traditional Irish hats.

I hope all the boys have an enjoyable holiday break, and a very happy Easter and look forward to seeing them back at the Boarding House towards the end of April.

Senior Boys  (Years 10 - 12 )

Welcome to the last Senior Boys' report for Term 1. As you can see by the following reports from the students, the boys have had an extremely busy term.

Wagga Under 16’s Cricket Grand Final

On the 10th of March 3 of our very special Boarders participated in the 2022-23 Wagga under 16's cricket grand final, playing for South Wagga Blues. Isaac Gooden, Albert and Uwen Middleton were lucky enough to come out on top on the day, playing extremely well, and being compared to some of the late greats Shane Warne and Don Bradman. The boys won by 51 runs with Isaac putting up a solid score of 59* to start the game and the other boys backing it up in the field with 5 wickets and 7 catches between them. Overall it was a great display of skill from the boys which we are very proud of ( the crowd showed this with an attendance of over 600). Once again the Boarders taking over the league of sport and making it their own.

South Wagga Blues def Lake Albert Bulls by 51 runs

P.S the boys are giving autographs out in the courtyard for the rest of term, get in while they're hot.

Hardy Shield Rugby League Grand Final

On the 27th of March Kildare Catholic College participated in the Hardy Shield Rugby league grand final defeating Kooringal High convincingly with a score line of 28-16. The Kildare team consisted of Year 12, Jed Beavan (Hooker) and Year 11 Angus Williams (Fullback) both of whom played extremely well displaying much skill in attack and defence, as well as determination and teamwork. Kooringal came firing out of the gates, opening the game with a converted try in the opening minutes.  Kildare quickly strikes back in the 15th minute with a skilful setup try from Jed. Kildare then went on to score another 3 tries before the half, leading 18-6 heading into the break. Kooringal capitalised after the break, scoring a quick converted try, decreasing the deficit to 6 points, and bringing them back into the game. Although impressive defence from Angus and Jed Kept Kooringal scoreless as KCC scored another 2 tries due to impressive ball skills and team efforts. Kooringal scored in the dying seconds of the game resulting in a 28-16 victory to KCC as Jed Beavan and Angus Williams played a vital role in the victory over Kooringal.

Time to Shine

Being a part of the MDCC and Catholic Schools' “time to shine” was a great experience for all who took part. I performed songs such as “Better" by the Screaming Jets and MDCC’s “Dream On.” Being a part of this performance was amazing, although even better was being a part of the audience and witnessing such great acts from all of the schools. They all performed immaculately. I am also writing this to let everybody know MDCC has another performance planned for later in the year. Please be sure to get a ticket for the Mater Dei Live and Loud Concert, held at the Riverina Playhouse Theatre.

Avalon International Air Show

Hi, my name is Anthony Whelan. I am a Corporal with 332 squadron City of Wagga Wagga Australia Air Force Cadets.

From the 10th to the 12th of March, I went down to the Avalon International Air Show in Victoria. Over the 2 days, I was there, I got to see nearly all of the 5th generation fighter planes and some of the 4th generation bombers, as well as numerous international aircraft from Japan, Malaysia, Britain and the United States. I got to see the Red Bull stunt Pilots and the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes. The whole weekend was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone if they have an opportunity to go.

Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Easter break.
