Sustainability

iSea, iCare

Last week the 4 ‘i Sea i Care Ambassadors’,  Hope, Jonah, Nathan and I went with Miss Liels to St. Joan of Arc, for the ‘i Sea i Care Peer Teaching Session’. We learnt about all sorts of different underwater creatures like, moon snails, 11 armed sea stars, Port Jackson sharks and Australian fur seals.

We had heaps of fun gathering notes and information with the other Sustainability leaders from St. Joan of Arc, Hampton Primary and St. Joseph’s. With the data we collected, we all worked together with the other schools to make a presentation for the grade 1’s at St. Joan of Arc. Our  group taught them all about marine life and how plastic is bad for the environment. We explored sea animals and helped them categorise them into creatures which are good for our marine life and which are not. After this experience, the Sustainability captains are going to teach the grade ones at our school, about the marine life.

As this years ‘i Sea i Care Ambassadors’ we have learnt so much. Did you know that sea stars eat by their stomach jumping out to eat the food. We learnt that younger people are kinetic learners and they like to ask a lot of questions.

We had heaps of fun, and can't wait until the next marine adventure!

4Ocean ~ Cleaning the ocean and coastline, one pound at a time.

4Oceans is the perfect story of 2 people with and idea and a dream. Their hard work and determination is helping remove thousands of kg of plastic from our oceans and coastlines.

Please have a read of their story below or visit their website to see their beautiful jewellery.

“The story begins when Alex and Andrew take a surf trip to Bali Indonesia that would inevitable change their lives and the fate of the ocean. Devastated by the amount of plastic in the ocean, they set out to find out why no one was doing anything about it. One afternoon they came across an old fishing village where fishermen were literally pushing their boat through piles of plastic that has washed up on the shore. The 2 surfers explained to the fishermen that someone has to do something about this if they want to continue fishing or there would be no fish left. They even continued to explain that their fishing nets are the perfect tool to gather the plastic from the ocean. “But we don’t get paid to collect plastic” they said, “we get paid to catch fish”… This line stuck with the 2 surfers and they knew it was time to hit the drawing board. After realizing that the demand for seafood was driving the fishermen to focus on fish instead of plastic, they knew they had to create something that could fund the desired cleanup efforts. This is how the 4Ocean Bracelet was born.

Made from recycled materials, every bracelet purchased funds the removal of 1 pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines.  In less than 2 years, 4Ocean has removed 629,942 pounds of trash from the ocean and coastlines.

4Oceans currently operates out of multiple countries and employs over 150 people worldwide.”

NUDE FOOD

Nude Food is a fantastic way to do our little bit for the environment and educate our children the impact that their actions have on the environment and their health. It’s the little things that make a big difference, and by cutting out disposable rubbish in our lunchboxes, we can reduce our waste considerably. We encourage everyone at St. FInbars to help out and reduce the amount of waste produced at our school.

Our Nude Food Wednesdays will continue during Term 2!

Students who bring a ‘Nude’ lunch or pledge to take their rubbish home will receive a raffle ticket into our termly draw!
