Maths

Recently the teachers from Prep, Year 4, 5 and 6 participated in a 2-day professional development on Algebraic Thinking run by Catholic Education Melbourne.  In a primary school setting algebraic thinking might require requires students to:

look for patterns in a series of objects or numbers

make generalisations or rules about the patterns they find

understand that both sides of an equation must balance

find the unknown in an equation

The teachers are looking forward to implementing what they learned at the PD into their classroom programs.

At St FInbar’s we try to instill a positive attitude towards mathematics in our students. There is much that you can do at home to also encourage a love of mathematics; you may find the following infographic helpful as it provides some tips for ways you can minimise anxiety about Maths and instead develop a positive attitude towards it.
