Sport News

Welcome to Sport 2020!

Welcome back to all families and a very special sporty-welcome to our new and Prep families!  We hope you all managed many opportunities over the break to enjoy some outdoor and recreational time with your children!  We are looking forward to a big sporting year ahead with your children where PARTICIPATION is our core goal! At St. Finbar’s we aim to provide various opportunities for our students to participate, set goals, accept challenges, develop further skills, try new physical challenges and games and enjoy trying both different and familiar team and individual sports.

Students will be provided with opportunities to participate in organised sport carnivals, learn from special sporting guests & club team visits, be given specialised coaching via participating in various sports clinics held in PE lessons and become team members of our Year 3-6 interschool sports events and carnivals.  These include Lightning Premiership tournaments for soccer, netball and football, Inter-school Winter Sport games, Cricket Blast tournaments, Learn to Swim lessons, and not to forget; the Hoop Time basketball tournaments!

Sport Information updates & permission

Each week, any forthcoming sporting event information will be noted in this Sport section of the newsletter.  Urgent reminders will also be delivered to families via emails sent by myself or via SeeSaw or Care Monkey.

SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH YOUR CHILD

Please allow your child to read the Sports section with you to help them develop independence and their organisational skills. There’s also many photos shared of students participating at our sporting events. Care Monkey permission emails will be sent out prior to each event; informing families of all event information & asking for parent/guardian consent.  Please keep these emails in your inbox for quick reference and for last-minute reminders before the forthcoming event.

Parent support at events

St. Finbar’s has for many years been very privileged to have an amazing parenting community when it comes to support for our sports carnivals, swimming programs and events.  We’d love to see as many new faces as possible this year to help ensure our sports days continue to run as fun and successful events. Parents will be informed early of upcoming dates and required times for Parent Help at events.  Please look out for ‘Parent Helpers required’ requests also on our Care Monkey Permission emails also. For any sporting event/carnival queries, please contact our Sports Coordinator; Mrs Tania Thompson via email: tthompson@sfbrightoneast.catholic.edu.au

2020 SSV State Team Trials: nomination process

Each year, extremely talented school students have the opportunity to trial for a place in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Team Vic state team and participate in annual School Sport Australia (SSA) Championships. These trials are strictly for senior students currently competing at an extremely high level in their chosen sport.  An example of this for AFL football would be that they have won or come Runner-Up the SMJFL (League) Best and Fairest for 12 year olds.  Having come Best and Fairest at team or even club level will not be sufficient.

*Sports included in this current trials process:

Boys Australian Football, Netball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, and Boys Football (Soccer).

There are other opportunities in other sports : please refer to the SSV website for other sport trial details.  A note outlining further details can be found here also.

Trials are not 'Come ‘n’ Try' opportunities.  They are a process for selecting a Team Vic State Team to represent the state at School Sport Australia Championships.

Please note that participation in SSV team Vic state teams is self-funded, so students will be required to pay costs of administration levies, uniform, flights, accommodation and meals (approx $2,500-$3,000).

A minor change to the process for 2020 is:

a.    12 Years and Under Girls Australian Football will be offered. All nominees will go direct to State Trials.

b.    12 Years and Under Girls Football (Soccer) will not be required to go through stages of selection. All nominees will go direct to State Trials.

IMPORTANT

To NOMINATE, parents (not students) must first:

- Seek approval from St. Finbar’s Sport Coordinator (Tania Thompson) including evidence of achievement at an elite level. St. Finbar’s requests a letter or email written by the child’s coach outlining the student’s outstanding skill level and achievements.  We encourage only students of a Year 5 or Year 6 level consider these trials if they fall into this elite sports category. This must be to the Sport Coordinator by Friday 14th February.

If approved for nomination by the school, parents then:

- Complete online nomination form

- Submit $25 non-refundable payment

- Have the Principal sign the nomination form

* Online nominations close by March 1st, 2020.   (www.ssv.vic.edu.au/team-vic)

Late entries will not be accepted under any circumstances.
