2020 Arts Captains

Kajal Desai and Zoe Unterrainer are our newly appointed Arts Captains for 2020.  I look forward to working in collaboration with them throughout year. Please read Kajal's and Zoe's reflections on becoming a 2020 Arts captains.

Kajal:

Being chosen to be Co-Art Captain is a great honour and privilege. For as long as I can remember Art is the class I have always looked forward to the most. Creating art is a way for an individual to convey their emotions and unique meanings as well as express themselves creatively. I believe anyone can create art which is why I want students to enjoy art as much as I do. I would love students to be more involved in Koonung’s Art program, either by joining ‘Art Space’ or alternately choosing an art subject as one of their electives. As Art Captains, Zoe and I would be happy to take into consideration anyone’s ideas or thoughts to create an art community within Koonung where everyone feels welcomed and involved.

Zoe:

As Co- Art Captain for 2020, my goal is that I would like students to express themselves through their artworks. Art is a great way to express yourself and in 2020 I would like to encourage the idea of building a sense of belonging and community at Koonung, because I understand what it feels like to be an outsider as I am from overseas. I understand isolation, but I also understand what belonging feels like and I would like everyone to feel part of the Koonung community. I encourage people to be able to come up to me or Kajal and share their ideas with us whether it’s about the Arts program, Arts space or about choosing Art as subject. “Art is the queen of all sciences, communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world” - Leonardo da Vinci”.

2020  Whitehorse City Artist in Schools program

Following the success  or our 'Koonung Creek Trail' mural, we are delighted to advise that in 2020 the Arts Domain are again hosting an 'Artist in School' through the Whitehorse City Council Artist in Schools Program.

Brett Ashby visited  our Urban Art classes  in  2019  for a school incursion involving a spray painting workshop.

It will be an exciting time as Brett has some great ideas on creating innovative and modern artworks to complement our new building structures for 2020. He will work  with the Year 9 Urban Art class.

The Koonung Community welcomes Brett,  he will no doubt bring a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to the Arts Domain and our Year 9 Urban Art classes.

Year 7 Art

Students in 7D have been exploring Artistic practice through responding and interpreting artist Gabriel Orozco's work. Students undertook a theoretical exploration of his practice and then created a group artwork where they collected found objects in the area and composed them together as a class to create this group artwork. Students will continue to explore a range of different artists in the SEE@K program.
