Zoo Maths Projects

During semester two Mr Smith has led a Zoo maths project that many of our students have enjoyed creating. It was a fun project that practiced real world maths. Students were challenged to design their own zoo whilst considering many factors during the planning process. Considerations included listing their chosen animals and how many square metres needed. Students also had to carefully calculate the area and perimeter of each exhibit, thinking about the animal’s needs and requirements, and the shape design they would use on the graph paper. Students were asked to research the animals to learn specific habitat requirements and complete the “zoo planning sheet”. They then used grid paper to draw a blueprint of the animal exhibits followed by labelling all other areas within the zoo such as parks, cafes and walking paths. Our students created some brilliant zoos as you can see in the attached photos.
