Careers News

Year 12

The long awaited release of HSC results and ATARs this year will provide students with a very short window to change preferences once ATARs are known.

  • 18 December: HSC results released by NESA
  • 18 December 9:00am:  ATARs released by UAC
  • 19 December midnight: change of preference deadline for Dec Round 2 offers

Again the advice is to put your preferred choice of course and university as the first preference and then use the other four preferences wisely and strategically. Advice from UAC and each university is available to help students make choices and possibly changes. I can also be contacted at the school and via email (mcccareers@arm.catholic.edu.au

If a student’s ATAR is much lower than expected, there are quite a few options available depending on the preferred choice of course and university.

Please do not hesitate to contact me so I can provide students and parents with some of the possible options available to them.

This will be emailed to students in late January  by JobJump. We encourage Year 12 leavers to  complete the survey to assist the school in planning for the future.

The information is also needed as required data for the McCarthy Annual School Report so please look out for the email and any reminders that are sent!

Year 11- Visit by University of Newcastle

Representatives from UON spoke to a group of interested students about courses and aspects of studying at Newcastle.

Year 10 - Visit to TAFE Infofest

Last week a group of interested students toured Tamworth TAFE to find out about courses offered there and saw the facilities available to full time TAFE students and TVET students. We toured the construction, hospitality, animal care, hair and beauty, childcare and other areas.

Work Experience

This year there have been limited opportunities for work experience due to Covid 19.  However recently several Year 10 students have chosen to do work experience which has resulted in several offers of apprenticeships. This is great news for the students and they are to be congratulated for their initiative and performance to receive the job offers.

Another work experience option was offered by Careers Network in Tamworth and taken up by Year 10 student Joe Melville.  Careers Network helped organise a work experience program run online by Amazon for a whole week. Joe was one of 20 students in the region and 300 students across NSW who participated in Amazon's AWS Educate. This is Amazon's global initiative to provide students with access to online workshops and webinars to develop and build their IT cloud skills. Joe found it a very interesting and rewarding experience.

The2020 Edition of Australian Jobs has been released by the National Skills Commission. The report provides an overview of trends in the Australian labour market for students, job seekers & those interested in labour market issues.
