Week 2 Snapshot

Welcome to Grade 4!

Welcome back to Brighton Primary School for 2021!

We are looking forward to what will hopefully be a much more normal year, with less interruptions. We are excited to be teaching this year's Grade 4 cohort of students and are impressed at how well they have settled back into school. Please see below for information about the learning we will be covering over the next two weeks.

English

To ensure that all students develop a love of reading we have dedicated the first few weeks of school to developing engagement and building stamina.

Students will help set up classroom libraries and establish routines for stocking their book boxes with a variety of fiction and nonfiction books that appeal to their interests. Some of these books will be "just right" for their reading stage and some of these books might be "browsing books" that are more challenging, but appeal to their interests.

To track how their stamina is improving, students have been timing how long they have maintained focus while independently reading and recording these times in a bar graph.

Students have been learning about the writer's workshop and the writing cycle. They will develop a writer's notebook to collect and reflect on their writing ideas. They are also exploring how authors find and gather ideas, plan their writing, draft and revise.

Students will also develop an understanding of the characteristics of a good writer and learn how to use a writing partner to help them with all stages of the writing cycle.

Mathematics

Students have been revising the Base 10 place value system. They have been playing games that involve reading, writing and representing five digit numbers. They have also been applying their knowledge of place value to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to assist calculations and solve problems.

To support our inquiry into wellbeing, students have been designing their own surveys to find out what others in the class do to look after their wellbeing. They have been presenting these results in a variety of graphs and sharing their findings with the class.

Unit of Inquiry

Students have been inquiring into the many factors that influence wellbeing. Throughout the inquiry they will be building their understanding around the following lines of inquiry:

The aspects of life that affect people’s wellbeing

How personal experiences and beliefs affect people’s wellbeing

How people self-manage their wellbeing.

Students have developed their understanding of what wellbeing means through watching videos, interviewing others and reflecting on what they do to look after their wellbeing.

As students develop a deeper understanding of wellbeing, they are starting to classify

experiences that have had a positive or negative impact on their wellbeing.

Wellbeing

Circles is a safe, fun and effective pedagogy for social and emotional learning. Throughout the year, Circles will be used to promote positive communication skills, empathy and connectedness, class cohesion and co-operation, friendship skills and ethical behaviour.

Homework

Homework information will be coming out in the upcoming weeks.
